Some great sewist tips from Alia from our Makers Edit crew this season. Here they are for you. She made the Billie Sweater in this beautiful cable knit fabric. From Alia:

I'm a serger girlie and LOVE using my Janome for everything I can, and shouldn't use it for! This fabric is so plush, though, that the serger knife couldn't handle it, but my sewing machine handled it like a dream! I used a very narrow zigzag stitch (1.2 width), on all the seams, even the ones that shouldn't really need any give, just for good luck. Instead of coverstitching the collar seam allowance, I simply topstitched and I love the effect. I couldn't find an iron setting that didn't leave shine marks, so finger pressing was the way to go. I'm so thrilled with the results!

Did you make any adjustments to the pattern to suit you, or learn anything new techniques when making your project?
I sized up to a 5 as I wanted more ease for a looser fit and more relaxed look. (My bust measurement put me at a size 3). I had clear elastic on hand and was so glad I used it on the shoulder seams. Knowing they won't stretch out over time is wonderful. The only other adjustment was I didn't grade and finish the seam allowances as intended in the instructions, as the thickness of the fabric affects how things lay.

How does sewing help you explore all that life has for you?
I love making clothes that are fun, unique, and feel fresh and young! Refining a skill and working toward a specific standard of stitching is such a rewarding experience, and feeling confident in my ability to sew something that looks professional is the greatest gift. Sewing is the perfect blend of creativity, productivity, and skill development!

Morgan from our Makers Edit shared some great sewist tips from her project. Here they are for you. She made the Fiore Skirt in this gorgeous flowy rayon. From Morgan:

- Do not skip pre-washing this fabric - it can shrink quite a bit! Wash and dry the fabric in the same way you'll care for the garment after you sew it.

- Take extra care when handling this fabric. Cut on a single layer, use pattern weights instead of pins when cutting, and make sure to stay stitch (or stabilize with bias tape) necklines, armholes and bias edges right after cutting so the fabric does not distort.

- Use fresh and sharp needles (Microtex) and use a shorter stitch length (2-2.5) to prevent puckering.

- A walking foot is helpful when sewing if you have it!

- I omitted the centre seam on the front so the beautiful pattern on the print would not be disturbed. I also sewed the hem with a baby hem, which is my preferred way to hem my viscose garments.
