Planning a trip to Japan?

This little book is a great place to start if you want to learn Japanese you can actually use on your trip in Japan.

Practical Japanese covers useful situations like ordering food, asking for directions, checking prices and times, making requests, and even explaining when you’re not feeling well.

And you don’t need to know hiragana or katakana yet. The Japanese comes with romaji and English explanations, so complete beginners can jump right in.

There are 27 short lessons, designed to be worked through in about a month.

Here’s one of our favorite vintage finds for the cooler season 🍂

This large Japanese kakishibu uchiwa is made with bamboo and paper coated in fermented persimmon tannin, which gives it its deep brown color and helps make the paper surprisingly sturdy.

These kinds of fans were practical everyday tools in Japan, often used to send air into a fire for cooking or heating.

That is exactly why we think this one is perfect for fall camping. If you are building a campfire or getting charcoal going, this big uchiwa moves a lot of air and is much more fun to use than a piece of cardboard.

The lucky mallet painted on the front is another detail we love, and the back still carries the name of an old fishing tackle shop, suggesting it was originally made as a promotional fan.

Each one has aged a little differently, with its own stains, brush marks, fading and kakishibu texture.

Perfect to take this straight to the campfire this fall 🪵🔥🏕️

This pre-owned uchiwa fan has a long bamboo handle and a navy fabric surface covered with tiny white dots.

What caught our eye was the pattern. The dots follow soft, flowing lines that almost look like a river, and against the dark navy background, they reminded us of the Milky Way stretching across the night sky.

The long handle also makes it really comfortable to hold, and the wide fabric surface creates a nice breeze with very little effort.

A lovely piece to actually use or simply display at home.

550 vintage Japanese canned food labels in one little book 🇯🇵🥫

From the Meiji to early Showa eras, these labels are full of bold colors, quirky illustrations, and beautiful old-school typography.

Such a fun book to flip through if you love vintage Japan, graphic design, or packaging.

We found these beautiful pre-owned Nara uchiwa fans made by Ikeda Gankodo, a long-established workshop in Nara.

What makes Nara uchiwa so special is the delicate sukashi-bori cutwork. The washi paper is carefully cut by hand, creating detailed patterns that let the light pass through and show the fine bamboo ribs underneath.

The red and pale blue fans feature a deer and a five-story pagoda, two familiar symbols of Nara, while the ivory one has a more intricate traditional pattern.

Please note that these are pre-owned, so each one has its own small signs of age and use.

Black or silver? This one is honestly hard to choose.

The silver has a lovely retro feel, and the matte black has a cool look that reminds me of a Japanese cast iron kettle.

I use the black one, and Meg uses the silver, so we clearly couldn’t choose one favourite either.

The matte finish is what makes this teapot feel extra special. It’s stainless steel, but it has a softer, warmer look than the usual shiny kind.

It also holds plenty of tea, which makes it great for everyday use, especially when you want more than just one small cup.

This hanten from Kurume Japan is one of those pieces you’ll keep reaching for. Lightly padded, breathable, and comfortable from morning to night. Perfect for this season when it’s still a bit chilly in the mornings and evenings.

Slightly shorter sleeves and deep front pockets make it easy to wear casually and practically throughout the day.

If you’ve never tried a hanten, this is a good place to start.
