A headboard does far more than sit behind the bed. It frames the room, creates balance and gives the eye somewhere to rest. More often than not, it’s the first feature you notice when you walk into a bedroom, making it one of the most important design decisions you’ll make.
Three things we always consider when designing a headboard:
☝🏻Proportion. A generously scaled headboard creates presence, bringing a sense of calm and balance to the room. Even in a smaller bedroom, we often choose an oversized design to achieve that effortless boutique hotel feel.
✌🏻Materials. Pairing harder elements such as timber or metal with tactile fabrics like velvet, textured linen or rich bouclé introduces softness and depth, making the room feel layered, inviting and effortlessly luxurious. Consider adding piping, contrast trims, stud detailing, mirrored panels or wallpaper inserts to elevate the design. The devil is always in the detail. We also recommend choosing stain-resistant fabrics to keep your headboard looking beautiful for years to come.
🤟🏻 Electrics. A beautiful headboard requires careful planning around sockets, switches and USB charging points. Think about bed size, socket positions and lighting early in the design process to avoid awkward compromises later. Conceal power behind bedside tables or integrate them seamlessly into the joinery, and decide from the outset whether table lamps, pendants or wall lights will best suit the space.
