We’ve realised that the ideas we come back to most are rarely about a particular look.

They’re usually much more practical than that.

What does this house already do well? What’s worth keeping? How will these materials actually wear? Where does the light fall? How do people move through the space? And will the finished home make everyday life feel a little easier?

We care about how a home looks, of course. But we care just as much about how it feels to live in.

We spend a great deal of time thinking about how the things we specify are made, and who we trust to make them.

At Northmoor, Jimmy from Fine Cut Woodworks helped bring our bespoke joinery designs to life, interpreting our drawings and plans into something tactile, precise and beautifully made.

The walnut joinery was designed to feel as though it belonged to the room from the outset, with proportion, grain, detailing and function all carefully resolved. Jimmy’s skill was in translating those decisions into something physical, with the level of craftsmanship that makes the difference up close.

For us, good joinery should do more than provide storage. It should sit comfortably within the architecture, respond to the materials around it and become part of how the room is experienced every day.

A material palette can look lovely laid out on a table, but the real test is how it feels once you’re actually living with it.

We think about how materials sit together, how they catch the light and how they’ll change over time. A smooth stone might need something softer alongside it. Dark timber can feel better balanced with a lighter finish. Brass will mark and mellow, and that’s often part of its appeal.

It’s really about choosing materials that don’t just look good on day one, but feel right to live with for years.

The original 1920s brick fireplace gave the snug character, but its position created an awkward dog-leg in the room.

Our bespoke walnut joinery was designed to give the space a better layout for modern life, introducing storage and technology without altering the original fabric of the building.

Behind the panelling, the fireplace has been carefully preserved so it can remain protected for future generations.

The walnut finish brings warmth and depth to the room, but its role is also practical: it gives the snug a more useful layout while allowing the period architecture to remain intact beneath it.

It is an approach we return to often in older houses. Good design can accommodate the way we live now while still respecting what was there before.

Before changing an old house, we spend a surprising amount of time looking at what is already there.

Not every awkward corner needs removing. Not every original feature deserves preserving simply because it is old. The biggest intervention is not always the one that actually improves the way the house works.

We look at the architecture, natural light, circulation, views, materials and relationship with the garden.

Then we look at the people.

Where everyone drops their things. Where breakfast happens. Whether somebody works from home. How the house feels when ten people come for dinner. Where the dog sleeps. Which room nobody uses and why.
Alongside that come the less glamorous, but equally important, questions around storage, lighting, heating, electrical planning and services.

A thoughtful renovation begins by understanding the building and the life that needs to happen inside it.

There are many ways to look at a house.

One of us might notice the quality of the natural light first. Another the proportions, circulation or architectural details. Someone else may immediately start noticing what has been altered over time, what feels original and where the building is asking for a little more clarity.

That variety is useful.

Our work at Kindly is collaborative, and the strongest decisions usually come from looking at the same problem from several angles before deciding what truly belongs.
So rather than introduce ourselves with job titles, we asked the team one question:

A house with an extraordinary history, and another chapter still to write.

Northmoor Road is a Grade II listed 1920s family home in Oxford. When we became involved, the challenge was not simply to update it, but to understand what deserved to remain, what needed to work harder and where a new layer could be added without losing the character of the original house.

Working alongside Riach Architects, we helped shape an interior that could accommodate contemporary family life while allowing the architecture, history and accumulated details of the house to remain present.

There is another layer to the story too.

This was once the home of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Rather than allowing that history to dictate the design, we treated it as part of the house’s fabric. Something to acknowledge quietly, rather than turn into a theme.

We’ll be sharing much more of Northmoor over the coming weeks.

Wellbeing in a home is rarely about adding something labelled “wellness”.

For us, it begins much earlier.

It is the morning light reaching the place where you have breakfast. A layout that allows people to move around one another without friction. Storage where you instinctively need it. Materials that are pleasant to touch and become better with use. Somewhere to gather at the end of the day, and somewhere quieter when you need to disappear for half an hour.

Acoustics, outlook, circulation, natural materials, comfort and connection to outside all play a part.

These decisions can seem small in isolation, but together they shape how easy a home feels to live in.

That is what designing for wellbeing means to us.

The KINDLY team were invited by RH to Aynho Park to celebrate the new collaboration between RH and Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team .

Set around Grand Prix weekend, the evening brought together many of the worlds KINDLY often works within: private homes, considered interiors, exceptional materials, hospitality, cars and the details that shape how people experience a space.

A beautiful evening in a setting where design, craftsmanship and atmosphere were considered at every level.
