One little test we love for a second home:

Imagine arriving on a Friday evening.

You are tired. It might be raining. There are bags in the car, coats to hang up, shoes by the door, perhaps a dog to dry off, and guests arriving the next morning.

Does the house make that moment feel easier?

Or does it immediately ask more of you?

Those first few minutes tell us a lot. Where the storage needs to be. How the entrance should work. Whether the guest rooms are simple to use. Which materials need to be forgiving. How the lighting should feel when you arrive after dark.

Because a second home should not feel like another list of jobs.

It should help you settle in.

Designing a second home is not quite the same as designing your main home.

A Cotswolds house might need to work for slow family weekends, muddy walks, visiting friends, school holidays, occasional remote working, and perhaps even short-term guests if it doubles as a holiday let.

That means beauty matters, but so does ease. You need somewhere sensible for boots and coats, guest rooms that are simple and comfortable to use, storage in the places people actually need it, and materials that can cope with real weekends rather than carefully staged ones.

Most of all, it should feel welcoming the moment you arrive. Not like another house to manage, or another list of jobs waiting for you.

That is where thoughtful design can make a real difference.

Stone, timber, wool, linen, plaster, ceramic and bronze.

Not chosen because they are having a moment, but because they have a timeless longevity to them.

They soften with age, layer beautifully, and bring warmth and texture to a home without ever feeling like they are trying too hard.

They are the materials we find ourselves returning to again and again at KINDLY, and the same palette we have chosen for our own studio.

Yesterday we spent the day at the at Estelle Manor, and came away feeling really thoughtful about what wellness can mean in everyday life.

There were brilliant talks, delicious food, generous conversations and a room full of fantastic, inspiring women.

What stayed with us most was the reminder that wellness should not feel difficult, performative or out of reach. It is shaped by how we care for our bodies, of course, but also by our environment, our relationships and the rhythm of our everyday lives.

At KINDLY, this is something we think about often. A home has such a quiet but powerful role in how we feel. The light we wake up to, the materials we live with, the way a room allows us to rest, gather, move, cook, host or simply pause. These things all matter.

Wellbeing is not only something we practise outside the home. It is something our homes can gently support every day.

Thank you to , and for hosting such a considered day, to and for the thoughtful conversations, and to and for the wellness workshops.

The quickest way to spoil a period home is to make it feel too perfect.

When working with an older house, there are a few things we always approach with care. It can be tempting to smooth out every surface, remove practical storage in the name of openness, or choose finishes that feel fresh in isolation but too sharp against the architecture.

Lighting matters enormously too, especially in older rooms where natural light can behave differently throughout the day. And often, the slightly odd details, the wonky corners, awkward proportions or unexpected features, are exactly what give the house its charm.

The aim is not to perfect a home beyond recognition. It is to help it work beautifully for modern life, while still feeling entirely like itself.

A period house does not need to be frozen in time.

But before you change it, it is worth taking the time to understand it properly.

How the light moves through the rooms. Which spaces are genuinely useful. Where the proportions feel right, and where the house is quietly asking for something better.

The best updates to period and character homes are not about stripping everything back or recreating the past.
They are about helping the house work beautifully for modern life, while protecting the details, atmosphere and sense of place that made you fall for it in the first place.

Beautiful homes rarely begin with perfect certainty.

They begin with good questions, honest priorities and a clear understanding of how the home needs to support the people living in it.

At KINDLY, we help clients move from scattered ideas to a thoughtful, practical plan, creating homes that feel warm, layered, personal and considered.

Especially in places like the Cotswolds and Oxfordshire, where older houses often come with quirks, history and plenty of moving parts, clarity at the beginning makes all the difference.

In our first conversation, we are not just asking what you want your home to look like.

Of course, the look matters. But before we get there, we want to understand how the house needs to work for you.

Where does the morning rush happen?
Where do people naturally gather?
What room gets avoided?
What do you wish felt easier?
Are you hosting every weekend, or craving somewhere to properly switch off after a long day?

These answers tell us a lot about you, more than a Pinterest board ever can.

They help us understand the rhythm of your home, the bits that are working, the bits that are quietly frustrating you, and the moments that could feel much better with the right design behind them.

Tell us, what is one thing you wish felt easier at home?

Before you hire an interior designer, it is worth asking a few useful questions.

Not to make the process feel serious or intimidating, but to help you feel clear, confident and properly supported from the start.

Who is making which decisions?
What is included in the scope?
How are architects and trades involved?
How often will you hear from the studio?
What happens if the project changes?

For Cotswolds homes, especially those with older buildings, trusted local trades and lots of moving parts, these conversations really matter.

The right studio will bring calm to the process, clarity to each stage and confidence that your home is being considered with care.

Save this if you are planning a renovation.
