October is Wool Month, so it's a great time to sing the praises of nature’s most versatile fibre. Honestly, where would we be without wool?

A few years ago, I read A Short History of the World According to Sheep, by the fantastic Sally Couthard, and I’ve been in awe of the humble sheep ever since. That clever coat has helped humans build societies, cross oceans, keep warm and make some rather wondrous everyday things.

Here at CoolCrafting, wool is close to our hearts. Luna Lapin and (nearly) all her friends are made from wool felt, and our little shop with its fantastic yarn room and rainbow of boiled wools sits just off Kendal’s historic Market Square, in a town whose fortunes were built on the wool trade. Wool really is our bread, or "Pannus mihi panis"

Ever year, you help us raise money for Jo's favourite charity, Greek Animal Rescue, by selling a knitted pumpkin pattern.

This year, we are doing it all again. If knitting isn't your thing - there is a crochet pumpkin to match—the very talented Aly designs this one. Both are suitible for a confident begginer and you can use different types of yarn to achieve different size pumpkins! How gourdgeous! You can buy a copy of either in store or download a PDF via our website.

All profits (£3.00 of each sale) will go to the charity.

We’ve always had a soft spot for a good book at CoolCrafting. There’s something lovely about sitting down with a new book, turning the pages, and searching for the next spark of inspiration.

Our bookshelves are full of creative adventures, from stitching and gorgeous knits to beautiful papercrafts and wonderful watercolours, each as tempting as the next!

We thought we’d share a few favourites, though choosing which ones to start with is proving a little tricky!

What craft books do you treasure? The ones with dog-eared pages and projects you’ve made time and again, or ideas you’ve been saving for just the right moment.
