There’s something about coastal interiors that feels effortlessly sophisticated. And it’s not necessarily about the sea views.

It’s the beauty of natural stone, the softness of linen against raw textures, and the way a single material can define an entire space.

This Marylebone home captures a side of London design we keep coming back to: beautiful original architecture paired with a softer, more contemporary way of living.

Warm neutrals sit alongside dark timber and aged brass. Clean-lined furniture contrasts with Georgian detailing. Green accents bring depth without overwhelming the palette, while mirrors, flowers and carefully chosen objects add just enough personality.

And rather than competing with the period features, every contemporary addition gives them space to breathe.

Even the transition outdoors feels considered — carrying the same restrained palette and sense of calm into the courtyard.

For us, this is what makes an interior feel timeless: not choosing between old and new, but knowing how to let the two belong together.

See? Never underestimate the power of art.

The interior hasn’t changed. The furniture, materials, lighting and architecture are all the same — but the moment the right artwork enters the space, everything feels different.

It creates a focal point, introduces contrast, brings personality and gives the room an identity that simply wasn’t there before.

After showing you how we approached the wider art curation at Minotti, we wanted to talk about one artist in particular: Ian Rayer-Smith.

When we look at Ian’s work, we don’t see something that needs to quietly blend into an interior.

Quite the opposite.

Minotti has such a precise design language — beautiful proportions, sophisticated materials, strong architectural lines. Ian brings something instinctive and expressive into that environment.

And that contrast is exactly what interested us.

His work introduces movement and emotion where everything else feels incredibly considered. It gives your eye somewhere to land and adds a layer to the room that furniture alone simply can’t create.

For us, that’s what good art curation is about.

We’re rarely asking, “Does this artwork match?”
We’re asking, “What does this artwork give the room that it doesn’t already have?”

Sometimes the answer is warmth. Sometimes scale. Sometimes calm.

With Ian, it was emotion and presence.
And we think these Minotti spaces show exactly why.

For our presentation at Minotti London, every area already had a very distinct identity: beautiful proportions, strong furniture, considered lighting and an incredible mix of materials.

So our question wasn’t “What can we put on this wall?”
It was “What does this space need?”

With Silent Rain, it was scale and presence. The architecture could hold a substantial work, but I still wanted something quiet enough to sit comfortably alongside the marble and sculptural lighting.

With Reflection, we wanted warmth and contrast. Its oxidised tones bring another dimension to an otherwise neutral setting without simply “matching” the furniture.

With Amber Dusk 1 & 2, restraint felt more interesting. And with the three smaller works, it was about recognising that a narrow wall didn’t need one large statement piece at all.

Those are the decisions we find most interesting about art curation.

It’s not about filling every wall or finding art that matches the sofa. It’s about understanding what the room is asking for — and knowing when art should create presence, warmth, contrast, rhythm or simply a quiet moment.

That’s when the artwork stops feeling added to an interior and starts feeling like it belongs there.
