Pause before you commit to shutters…

The café curtain is having a moment right now - and rightfully so. Softer, lighter, more romantic than any heavy window treatment, and honestly? Far more versatile than you’d ever expect. I’m talking kitchens, cloakrooms, utility rooms, larders - even as an internal screen over open shelving/door frames. That effortlessly undone, slightly country bumpkin, quietly Parisian energy that’s really hard to replicate any other way.

They filter light without killing it. They give privacy without weight. And the best part - you can genuinely hang them yourself. Top and bottom rods for that flat bistro look. Single rod at the top for something looser and more romantic. Both beautiful. Totally different feeling.

So if you’re currently choosing window treatments for a renovation or refresh, this is your reminder that you don’t have to default to shutters. Sometimes a simple café curtain creates a much lighter, more inviting feel.

The Project ‘It’s All About You’ cloakroom was crying out for a House Nine soul injection - and we did not hold back. Vertical V-groove panelling running up and over the ceiling for instant texture and height. Our custom Frida vanity in a deep chocolate-stained reeded oak with a stepped marble backsplash. Unlacquered brass fittings that will only get more beautiful with age. And THAT floor.

Paint is of course my favourite neutrals combo: Jojo’s White & Home Is, both .

Sharing something a little different from interiors today - but this place really stayed with me after our recent trip to Crete.

The little island of Spinalonga. The last leprosy colony in Europe - abandoned only in 1957. Not ancient history. Living memory. Walking these streets, I felt such a weight and sadness from everything that happened here. The exile, the fear, the heartbreak of families torn apart. But also something so beautifully unexpected was the stories of community, resilience, and real, enduring love found in the most isolating of circumstances.

A place of profound suffering, yet breathtaking in its beauty. And there was something deeply moving about the way nature has quietly reclaimed its place amongst the old stone buildings - wildflowers pushing through crumbling walls and threading through doorways. Life, finding a way back in.

Sometimes the most moving places are the ones that hold both pain and beauty in the same breath.

Grateful for these few stolen hours to stand somewhere that quietly demands you pay attention.

Things I’m loving (and always will): Storage Edition.

Storage. The word doesn’t exactly set the heart racing, does it.

But if you ask me what separates a beautifully designed home from one that’s simply decorated, it’s often this. The best homes aren’t the ones with the fewest possessions - minimalist spaces that look untouched. They’re the ones that have been thoughtfully designed to hold your wonderfully cascading real life. The stacks of dog-eared books, school bags, board games, laundry piles, muddy wellies and all the other bits that make a house feel truly lived in.

That’s where thoughtful storage, bespoke joinery and clever interior architecture come in. A boot room that catches the chaos before it reaches the kitchen. A bedside niche for your current read. Woven basket cubbies for the overflowing toys. These are the details that quietly transform how a home feels to live in.

You can choose the right metal and still get the finish completely wrong…

Part three of my metal series is here, and I’m breaking down why finish matters more than people realise.

Because polished brass and brushed brass are not the same product. Not even close. One is high shine and traditional. One is soft, matte and hides every fingerprint. And then there’s unlacquered brass - my personal favourite - a living finish that develops a beautiful patina over time.

When I specify hardware on a project I’m thinking about how it will look in ten years, not just on installation day. That’s the decision you’re really making when you choose a finish.

I’ve just touched down in Ireland for the final photoshoot of Project Dublin - an unforgettable family home we completed back in December.

Yes, it’s taken us six months to photograph it. I know, I know. Interior designers really are professional teasers. We show you a corner, a cushion, a tantalising bit of joinery, then hold back the final reveal for half a year while we wait for that glorious early summer light to arrive. But trust me, this one will be worth it.

In the meantime, here’s a little whistle-stop tour of one of our most-loved projects: Hastings House, an early-1900s property in the Cotswolds. Much like our wonderful client, the house is fun, charming and loves a party. It’s the kind of home that’s happiest when it’s full of people, muddy dogs, good food and someone opening another bottle long after they said they were heading home.

Fad or forever? Let’s settle this.

As an interior designer I get asked about trends constantly - my thoughts on everything from boucle to limewash walls to crittal doors to terrazzo. So I’m going on record. No fence sitting here. Which trends are evergreen, and which are already on borrowed time.

Now if I call something a fad, it absolutely does not mean you need to eject it from your home. If you love it, it stays. End of. But I do believe in designing with intention - buying better, buying less, and choosing pieces you won’t be ripping out in five years. Think of this as your future-proofing guide - design choices that will still look good long after the algorithm has moved on.

Arches: timeless or overdone?

You can’t spell architecture without arch - and when done right, they bring softness, flow and playfulness to a home, making adjoining spaces feel more connected and inviting.

But here’s my rule: the architecture must earn the arch. Proportion, purpose and context are everything. Get it wrong and even the most beautiful arch will look like it’s wandered in from another house entirely.

The best arches feel intentional - particularly in period homes and character properties, where they enhance what’s already there rather than fight against it.
