It’s so good to get away, but my god is it good to be home. Even if I am currently drowning in washing and life admin.

This bank holiday weekend has offered a very welcome pause before normality resumes - back to school for the girls, back to business as usual for me and Brad… although business as usual isn’t quite on the agenda for the next couple of weeks (when is it ever 🙃). I have an announcement coming that I’ve been sitting on for a while and genuinely cannot wait to share, and then next week, the book finally lands.

The final chapter is called ‘Gather’ - all about hosting, and the art of sharing your home. Which brings me to this guest suite at Project Sandbanks…

I truly believe a house only becomes a home when it happily holds the people we love most. And a bed you want to disappear into is always the goal. The rust-striped linen headboard, layers of soft, washed textures and that warm, earthy palette all working together to create something that feels relaxed rather than overly ‘done’. The kind of ease that encourages guests to linger a little longer, breathe a little slower.

And then it’s the little things.

A bedside table with a couple of books, fresh flowers and somewhere to put the inevitable cup of tea. A guest bathroom with warm brass, soft lighting and a towel always within reach. Nothing particularly grand. Just lots of small decisions made with someone else’s comfort in mind.

For me, home has always been less about perfection and more about feeling. How a space makes you exhale when you walk through the door, and how it seems to wrap itself around the rhythms of your daily life. Yes, I love beautiful things. Yes, I spend my days designing homes for clients. But I’ve learnt that beauty without soul leaves you cold. A house only becomes a home when it reflects the people who live there.

My portfolio is my canvas. A moment we captured, a vision made real. It’s not a lie. But it’s also not 7am on a school day. That’s when I different kind of beauty takes shape. Life overflows, spills, scatters, and leaves its fingerprints on everything. The most beautiful homes I’ve ever walked into are the ones that feel lived in. The ones where you can tell someone made toast here this morning. Where the dog has a spot on the sofa. Where the children have left their mark.

It’s been a wee while since I posted this one, so thought I’d spice things up with a little before and after action.

Before, a dark stone floor and a chopped-up hallway that didn’t quite know what it wanted to be. After… an entrance that actually earns the name.

Entrance halls should never be an afterthought - they’re the perfect place to set the tone for your whole home. A well-designed hallway should feel intentional from the moment you step through the door.

Tongue and groove panelling wraps the walls and ceiling, painted out top to toe so it feels calm rather than busy - in our very own Jojo’s White, with Home Is on the skirting I might add (This is The Paint.).

Flooring deserves real thought here too, as it’s one of the most high-traffic areas in the house. Here, we specified tumbled limestone tiles laid in a diagonal checkerboard, guiding you straight down the hall - with plenty of custom boot room storage to boot.

5 things every kitchen needs…

A kitchen has to work hard. It’s the engine room of the house - somewhere we cook, clean, work, gather, entertain, unload the weekly shop and, inevitably, leave yesterday’s coffee cup. But the best kitchen design doesn’t just accommodate all of that. It makes you want to be in the room, to linger long after the dishes are done.

The secret, as always, lies in the layering. And I have five core principles I return to on every kitchen project:

1. Texture - earthy accessories that soften all those hard surfaces and make the room feel lived in.
2. Character - mixed metals, aged finishes and details that stop a kitchen feeling too uniform.
3. Atmosphere - layered kitchen lighting that takes you from bright, practical workspace to something more warm and inviting.
4. Comfort - something underfoot, whether that’s a vintage runner or a well-worn rug, to add softness and personality.
5. Editing - considered kitchen shelving, where everything has earned its place.

But above all, embrace the real life of it. The best kitchen interiors aren’t pristine showrooms. They’re spaces that can take a little wear and still get better with age. The scuff on the worktop. The vintage bowl with a chip in it. The runner with faded, timeworn colours. A kitchen preserved exactly as it was on installation day might be beautiful, but it won’t necessarily have soul. And for the heart of the home, soul is non-negotiable.

This is something I come back to throughout my book, No Place Like Home: there is no single right or wrong way to design a home. There’s only your story, and your way of living. The best interiors are the ones that tell those stories unapologetically.

The book will give you tools, yes. But more than that, it will give you permission. Permission to let your home evolve. Permission to hold onto the things that matter, even if they don’t “match.” Permission to find beauty in the imperfect.

My kinda island, where I can see my soul colour everywhere I look.

A little dedication to my love of a green door. Every shade under the sun, all over the houses of Île de Ré - sage, sea green, olive, that faded eucalyptus grey-green that only happens after decades of Atlantic weather. A colour palette that has become so synonymous with the island that it’s known as Ré la Blanche, after its characteristic white houses dressed in green or blue shutters. Wandering through the lanes of Saint-Martin-de-Ré to the quieter backstreets, you can’t help but notice how beautifully this simple architectural language has endured.

I have a thing about doors. They set the tone for everything that follows - the house, the mood, the whole street. Travel shapes how I see, and this island (Île de Ré, just off La Rochelle, for anyone plotting their next French coastal trip) is doing exactly what the best places do: filling me up quietly, no fanfare, the kind of beauty that seeps in and turns up in the work months from now, long after the holiday’s packed away.

A dressing room lives and dies by its lighting.

One overhead pendant will never do it, or God forbid a grid of recessed downlights (more on this in my latest Substack). You need layers. A brass ceiling flush-mount, a wall sconce beside the shelving and a clamshell desk lamp on the vanity. Three sources, three heights, and suddenly you can actually see what you’re doing at 7am. Revolutionary, I know.

Balanced illumination from all angles, that’s what we want. Not a harsh, UFO beam from a spotlight above - no one needs to feel like they’re being prepped for alien abduction while applying their mascara.

Now just imagine escaping the household chaos for ten minutes of actual me-time, in a dressing room like this…

Summer holiday off to a start. Week one came with a complimentary side of anxiety and pre-departure dread, followed swiftly by a sick kid on day two. So instead of the leisurely Loire Valley touring we’d envisioned, we were “trapped” in a stunning little family-run chateau. Tragic, I know. Especially since it was fully stocked with the two essentials: wine and Orangina, courtesy of an honesty bar… Free from judgement.

At one particularly low point I actually googled “why am I so freaking tired on holiday?” Turns out it’s science. My body finally clocked off from the daily adrenaline drip of real life and let the exhaustion I’d been outrunning for months catch up with me. Riveting stuff.

A week in, though, as the tiredness dissipates, something else is surfacing: a woman I genuinely forgot existed. One who can sit still, instead of already mentally onto the next thing. For now, I am being terribly selfish and parking all my worries and woes at the door.

Ok, I am also a business owner with a book coming out next month, did I mention that?! ;) So naturally I’ve still been working, just not the flat out, no days off nature I’m usually accustomed to.

Île de Ré will apparently do that to you, helped enormously by wine, cheese, and truly heroic quantities of bread.
I have officially evolved into a sandy-toed, slightly sunburnt, bike-hopping, bread-grabbing, cheese-devouring, wine-guzzling, child-squidging, crab-catching, oyster-shucking, board game playing creature of leisure. Next stop on route coming soon my loves … toot toot.

Things I’m loving (and always will): Flooring Edition.

Ask any interior designer and they’ll tell you, flooring is the design decision that demands the most commitment and the most foresight. It sets the tone before a single piece of furniture arrives, and it’s not something you can casually swap out six months later. Flooring regret is a hard pill to swallow.

And if you’re putting that much thought into what’s underfoot, don’t overlook the thresholds.

Yes, I’m talking about that small, unglamorous strip where one material clocks off and another clocks on. It’s one of the hardest-working details in a home, marking the boundary between public and private, wet and dry, loud and quiet, formal and casual. Get it right and a home reads as truly considered from the ground up.

Life is far too short for a boring meeting of two materials that never quite shook hands.

Swipe through for some of my favourite flooring moments from projects past. Tumbled marble and travertine chequerboard, terracotta in picket, herringbone and arabesque, buttered to burnt oak, limestone that shifts scale from kitchen to pantry, and mosaic details with centuries of history behind them. None of these decisions happened by accident. Material, format, scale, pattern, grout colour, finish... every detail earns its place.

Whether you’re renovating, building from scratch, or just deciding where the fun bits of the floor plan should go, give this one a save.
