Antique Caucasian Bordjalou Kazak rug of very abstract design, these are the most northerly of the Kazak rugs.
Circa 1870.
The rug has three large latch hook medallions on a madder red field, there are many abstract filler elements covering the field. The ivory ground border has the ‘arrow-block’ design, this is scarce on Kazak rugs. This attractive rug is of a smaller size than is normally found. The rug has glossy wool with a soft floppy handle, as expected it has multiple ivory wefts. Please dm for details.

One of the best! Now in a private collection.
Antique Caucasian triple medallion Kazak rug with superb colour and great design.

2nd half 19th century.

This rug is an outstanding example of this clearly defined group of Kazak rugs from the south west Caucasus. This example is of the classic design with two white octagons and the central white medallion. The design of the white octagon medallions shows a clear connection with the designs found in Lori Pambak rugs.

The border is of the relatively scarce ‘arrow block’ design on a dark indigo ground.
Please dm for details of our other collectible Caucasian rugs.

Antique Ersari Turkmen torba with star in octagon design of large size.
Circa 1870.
A very good torba with a well drawn example of this classic Ersari design. The colour is superb with a clear red. The central star in octagon is surrounded by six further stars on a dark indigo blue ground. The most unusual feature is the main border being in very soft undyed brown wool, this could be camel wool. This is without doubt an unusual and scarce torba possibly of an earlier date than stated. Please dm for more details.

Antique Tabriz carpet from the famous workshops of ‘Benlian’; note his well-known star signature in the corner.

Circa 1900/20.

The renowned dealer Franses, writes as follows: The Benlian workshops manufactured carpets for the European market in the city of Tabriz during the first half of the 20th century. Edward E Benlian was a London carpet dealer of Armenian descent who maximized his ties to the thriving Armenian community of Tabriz at the beginning of the last century to produce some of the best quality and most sought after Persian carpets of the era. His master weavers included Javan Amirkizi and Mahmud Ghalicheh. The Benlian designers successfully reinterpreted the classical carpet designs of 16th and 17th century Safavid Persia, simplifying and unifying the iconic patterns and using a lighter, more European-style palette and strong graphic quality that continues to appeal to modern taste.

This outstanding example is of a Safavid floral design on a cream coloured ground, framed by a classical floral border. The carpet has an overall light feel with very soft pastel colours and would grace the finest of rooms. The famous Benlian star can be seen in the inner border, upper left hand corner and is signed for the workshop of the master weaver Javan Amirkhiz.
