Here’s a rather special pot from the front of the wood kiln. Thrown in Cornish Dobles clay which tends to go quite dark on its own in the anagama, it’s brushed with a 50/50 flashing slip of feldspar and kaolin which gives it a glossy sheen, a bit like a conker (buckeye to my American friends). This one will be part of the Thelma Hulbert Gallery Present Makers 2026 showcase of South West makers, opening this Saturday November 7th 10am-5pm ✨

Make a Clay Dinosaur (8-12 years)
Learn how to build a t-rex-traordinary clay dinosaur using local Cornish clay! You’ll be guided step by step through how to use coiling and pinching techniques to create your own unique dinosaur. After the workshop dinosaurs will be glazed in your choice of one of five colours.

Make a Coiled Mug
Learn how to create your own personalised stoneware mug from scratch using coiling and slab rolling techniques. After the workshop your mug will be glazed in your choice of colour and high fired to be durable, microwave and dishwasher safe.

This time next week you can find me among the more than 200 exhibitors at the Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair in Manchester. From Thursday October 15th to Sunday October 18th I’ll be at stand C14 in pool C of the iconic Victoria Baths. The listed building is renowned for its Edwardian craftsmanship including stained glass, colourful mosaics and glazed tiles which I’m so looking forward to seeing as a first time exhibitor!

Firing to high temperatures with wood is an intense thing to put clay through, and it’s often the most flashy, beautifully ash dappled pots at the hot front of the kiln that are unfortunately susceptible to the most damage. I’ve just been updating our ‘seconds’ section of the Maddy Carragher gallery with some pots that have really special surfaces but sadly a little blemish. If you’re interested in having a look, the gallery at Kigbeare is open Tuesday to Saturday 10.30 to 5 or by appointment.

We're thrilled to announce that Crux Craft Fair will return to Rattery Village Hall Friday 27 – Sunday 29 November.

Crux Craft Fair is an annual friendly Christmas craft market offering beautiful and unique crafts handmade by local Devon designers. The fair is firmly established as the southwest’s premier Christmas craft event and offers the perfect opportunity for visitors to shop locally for gifts.

Over 30 exhibitors from the southwest are carefully selected. Expect leather goods, ceramics, jewellery, woven work and clothing, prints, woodwork, basketry, chocolates and more!

The Cellar Door, a fabulous husband and wife team from Dartmouth, will be running the Crux cafe again this year. Chefs Charlie and Dan use locally sourced seasonal produce, including some from their own smallholding, to create delicious and beautiful food.

Every year Crux Craft Fair supports a local charity, and this year Crux will raise funds for Dart Sailability a charity that enables anybody with a physical or mental disability to enjoy sailing, boating and social activities on the River Dart. Run by volunteers Dart Sailability take to the water as often as possible tides permitting, from spring to mid autumn. Their simple rule of thumb is "if you can sit you can sail"!

This Thursday I head up north for Craft Festival Wales at Cardigan Castle, exhibiting at a show for the first time in the part of the country where I was born. The festival is a vibrant and collaborative celebration of craft with over 90 contemporary craft makers working across ceramics, glass, textiles, jewellery, metal, wood, print, paper, leather, recycled and mixed media.

The show is open from Friday September 11th to Sunday September 13th 10-5pm and you can find me at stand 38. The festival is operating a free park and ride service from Cardigan showground. I hope some of you can make it!
