Last week, our Lighting Consultants and hosted a group of clients at the WE-EF Light Box in Melbourne. As always, it was a fantastic and highly worthwhile experience.

The group explored a range of lighting applications and industry standards, and had detailed discussions on dark sky principles and lighting controls. Theresa Jones from the University of Melbourne presented on the effects of light pollution on wildlife and animal behaviour, which gave everyone plenty to think about.

Another highlight of the trip was a walking tour of Melbourne with Tim Hunt from Arup. As a night-time designer and lighting specialist, Tim was able to share real world examples of effective and ineffective lighting, and perspectives on how people experience and respond to different lighting environments. This led to plenty of open discussion and individual perspectives amongst the group.

A worthwhile few days, with valuable insights and fresh perspectives across a range of exterior lighting topics.

Brand Spotlight: WE-EF

WE-EF was one of the very first brands we partnered with, and for good reason. Since its foundation in 1950, WE-EF has consistently set the benchmark in professional exterior lighting through considered design and advanced technology.

Longevity sits at the heart of WE-EF’s DNA, both in aesthetics and performance. A key part of that is their use of ultra low copper aluminium alloys, with copper content below 0.5% This is critical in coastal and marine environments, as reduced copper dramatically improves corrosion resistance and extends product life. It makes WE-EF luminaires particularly well suited to the demanding exterior conditions we see so often across New Zealand.

Since becoming the exclusive New Zealand distributor in 2011, we have seen WE-EF lighting enhance iconic public spaces including the Lost and Found Art Installation in Auckland, Dunedin’s George Street and the Taupō waterfront. While the visual results are always impressive, what stands out most is how consistently these fittings perform and age over time. That lasting quality is what sets WE-EF apart.

Pink lighting?! We’re here for it. Especially when it involves donuts.

MHL worked alongside DMC Interiors on the lighting for Dunkin' Donuts at Auckland International Airport. The brief: make the space stand out in a busy arrival hall, and make the products look genuinely good.

The counter features an Austube Schréder 45 GREENSTAR 3 Slot linear extrusion, finished in pink to match the brand. Above it, Unios ION S spotlights on track deliver focused accent lighting across the space. High CRI throughout ensures the donuts look exactly as good as they should.

Getting the balance right in a busy arrival hall isn't straightforward. It requires enough visual punch to compete with surrounding retail, without creating glare in a high-traffic public circulation area. The Greenstar's glare control louvre does a lot of the work there.

The result is a space that's easy to find and easy to enjoy.

Max just got a little more dramatic.
The Unios Max freestanding light is now available in black, and we think it looks rather stunning.

Max is a plug-and-play freestanding light that brings direct and indirect illumination to any workspace with no ceiling cuts, no wiring, and no installation downtime. Adjustable brightness and colour temperature, asymmetrical optics for low glare, and all of it from a single socket.

The black finish is a natural fit for darker palettes and more design-forward interiors.

We also want to mention: Max is still on tour in New Zealand. The light has been visiting offices around the country over the past few months, spending a week at a time in different workplaces. The tour is nearly wrapped up, but there are a couple of spots still open. If you have been curious about what Max could do for your space, now is the time to put your hand up. As designers, architects, engineers and specifiers, we often work through lighting solutions on paper, in models, and in spec documents. But sometimes the best way to really understand lighting is to go out into the real world and look at it.

With that in mind, we recently organised a guided walk through Tauranga CBD with some of our local customers and partners, taking a close look at various lighting installations across the city.

The tour, guided by David McCalman, Bryan Chan and Stephan Foucher, presented an opportunity to discuss different aspects of lighting as a group, see how different lighting solutions come to life in the real world and experience in person what does and doesn’t work well.

It made for a genuinely informative evening. Good discussion, plenty of perspectives and ideas shared, and a fair bit learned by everyone involved.

We're looking forward to running something similar in other cities around New Zealand. Let us know if that's of interest.

A couple of years ago, we specified WE-EF FLC230s with special Zhaga-based optical platforms for the Sylvia Park, Te Kehu Intersection.

As a result of this custom lighting solution the intersection integrates extremely well with the adjacent outdoor spaces, while ensuring road safety through precise lighting distribution.

Considering this outcome, we’re excited to share that WE-EF has released the upgraded FLC200 Street & Area series featuring Zhaga-based optical platforms across the FLC230, FLC240 and FLC260 families.

The release introduces new street and area optical distributions within the familiar FLC200 platform. Outputs reach up to around 23,500 lumens, with IP66/IK07 construction and 5CE+ corrosion protection, making these well suited to New Zealand's coastal and high-UV exterior conditions.

The new optical options significantly extend the flexibility of the FLC200 platform across a wide range of exterior applications, from streetscaping and car parks through to amenity and area lighting.

Lighting a public open space is always an interesting challenge, and the Papatoetoe Stadium Reserve was no exception.

Papatoetoe Stadium Reserve is a precinct-scale public realm project in South Auckland. The brief from Auckland Urban Development Office centred on functional safety: walkways, cycleways, and open areas needed to support safe passage after dark without actively encouraging late-night use.

We supplied WE-EF LIGHTING AFL120 street luminaires with Zhaga sensor modules and WE-EF FLC321 fittings across the precinct. The AFL120 uses a P66 optic designed specifically for pedestrian pathway and cycleway applications, specified at 3000K to suit the residential context. Zhaga dimming keeps energy use proportionate to actual demand: luminaires activate at dusk at full output, dim to 20% at 10pm, ramp up on detected movement, and switch off at dawn.
