We just unboxed the Shanling CT90, a CD transport for people who built their system around a DAC.
A transport reads the disc and passes the music on, still digital, to a separate DAC (the part that turns digital into sound). The CT90 has no DAC and no analogue outputs, so it pairs with the DAC you already own, or with active speakers that take an AES/EBU digital input. There's no Wi-Fi either.
The connections are where it earns its place. I2S over HDMI, a direct digital link that some DACs accept, comes with 10 pinout modes to match different DACs. Alongside it are two AES/EBU outputs, coaxial and USB, plus a word clock input for syncing to a master clock. It reads CD, CD-R, CD-RW and MQA-CD from a top-loading drive, and plays from a USB drive or Bluetooth too.
