Nearing the Finish Line: Three Behavioral Health Facilities Designed to Expand Access to Crisis Care Across Ohio

Construction is nearing completion on three projects for Coleman Health Services.

+Detail is leading the architecture and interior design for:

Belmont Behavioral Health Urgent Care – St. Clairsville, Ohio
Portage Crisis Center – Ravenna, Ohio
Stark Behavioral Health Urgent Care – Canton, Ohio

Together, these projects represent a major shift in how behavioral health services are delivered. Instead of relying on emergency departments or correctional facilities, these centers provide dedicated spaces for assessment, stabilization, and treatment. They are designed specifically around safety, dignity, operational flow, and emotional well-being.

Close coordination with providers, staff, and community stakeholders ensure the buildings support both patient care and caregiver workflows.

These projects represent years of planning, collaboration, and a shared commitment to improving behavioral health access across Ohio.

We’re looking forward to sharing more as these facilities prepare to open later this year!

Project Partners:
Coleman Health Services
Ohio Department of Behavioral Health
Mental Health & Recovery Board of Portage County
Mental Health and Recovery Board Belmont Harrison and Monroe Counties
Stark Mental Health and Addiction Recovery

Better environments come from curious people.

At +Detail, we believe design doesn’t only happen in the office. It happens in galleries, workshops, conversations, and communities. We encourage our team to study craft, support local makers, and stay connected to the creative ecosystems that surround us.

This month, Dylan Rundle, Project Designer, shares his perspective after visiting The Calculated Plane exhibition at Context Fine Art.

"Buildings, music, food, and films will surely still exist without architects, composers, chefs, and directors. But these mediums are better because of these vocations. Devotion to craft and the benefits brought to society are what make these professionals invaluable. These people organize local talent, resources, and funds to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

An architect strongly rooted in a local ecosystem of artisans will make work that truly benefits their community and contributes to their own self-realization. Architects ought to be in search of craftspeople like the way a composer searches for people to play their music.

The +Detail team recently visited Context Fine Art to see The Calculated Plane as well as other pieces from the gallery’s collection. We look forward to visiting more local gallery shows in the future to keep our eyes sharp and continue expanding our network of local talent."

We’re excited to introduce a new monthly series, “View from Our Team,” where our team shares what’s inspiring them outside the office, from art and travel to volunteering and community involvement, and how those experiences shape the way we think about design.

Because better design comes from people who stay curious.

What if the design of a space could help a child regulate their emotions, feel safe, and begin to heal?

The first phase of the Child & Adolescent Medical Psychiatric Unit at University Hospitals Horvitz Tower is now complete. With no detail left behind, the Medical Behavioral Unit is redefining what pediatric behavioral health environments can feel like.

Upon completion, the 21,600 SF Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Unit (CAPU) and Medical Behavioral Unit will support not only clinical care, but dignity, emotional regulation, and connection.

+Detail led the interior design and environmental graphics, in collaboration with Turner Construction Company, Perspectus Architecture (Architect), IMEG (MEP), and Barber & Hoffman, Inc. (Structural).

Together, the team reimagined behavioral health social spaces as restorative landscapes that promote movement, calm, and healing. Curved enclosures with deep purple ribbons weave through the design and wrap patients in protective forms. This soothes the nervous system while enabling connection between peers and caregivers. Strategically placed openings cultivate a sense of autonomy and belonging, ensuring spaces feel welcoming rather than overwhelming.

The goal was simple but powerful:

Create a space where children and adolescents feel safe, respected, and supported in their healing journey.

Projects like this remind us that design plays a real role in behavioral health outcomes.

At +Detail, we believe healthcare environments should do more than function well.

They should support people at their most vulnerable moments.

We look forward to the completion of Phase II and the positive impact it will have on those it serves.

Welcome to +Detail, Dylan Rundle ✨

We’re excited to welcome Dylan Rundle to the +Detail team as a Project Designer.

Dylan is a designer and interdisciplinary artist originally from the Pittsburgh area. In 2022, he earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture and a minor in studio art from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Rundle has exhibited in solo and group shows regionally, and his work has been published by Dezeen , AD, and Cleveland’s Canvas Magazine.

Prior to +Detail, he worked at a variety of design practices, applying specialization in parametric design technologies and visualization for both local and international projects.

At its best, Rundle’s artistic and design work is the same practice; they supplement one another. He believes in the unification of all artistic disciplines and craftspeople as a means of building collective power for everyone. He embraces the artistic and empathetic nature of architectural practice as a vehicle for putting goodness into his community. While working, Dylan prioritizes being observant, methodical, and pursuing unorthodox solutions.

Dylan and his wife, Sarah, love being part of the region’s thriving, diverse artistic community. From live music and performances to gallery shows, there’s always something compelling to witness in Cleveland, and they are proud to call it home. Dylan enjoys bizzare music and films, dancing to his favorite local vinyl DJs, and being the father of his houseplants.

Welcome to the team, Dylan. We are thrilled to have your energy and talent in the office. 👋

Lerner Tower | After → Before

At University Hospitals' main campus medical center, +Detail completed the first phase of a multi-floor Common Area Refresh at Lerner Tower, beginning with the 4th Floor.

The project replaced aging carpet, insufficient lighting, and constrained staff hubs without disrupting operations or patient rooms. Clean durable finishes, clear signage, and reimagined nurse stations are designed to support focus, efficiency, and well-being.

Guided by University Hospitals’ mission: To Heal. To Teach. To Discover. The work demonstrates the impact of thoughtfully designed spaces, elevating the daily experiences of patients, staff, and visitors.

This is the first of several floors planned for renovation, utilizing University Hospitals’ design standards through Follio®. Consistent design elements from floor to floor enhance the continuum of care, instilling confidence along the patient's journey. The project’s success highlights the efficiency of well-developed standards from project inception to completion and beyond.

As Dominic shared:
“This milestone symbolizes the peak of the challenging and fulfilling work, experiences, and relationships I formed along the way. I’m excited to step into this next chapter with the professional title of Architect.”

At +Detail, we believe investing in our people strengthens the quality of our work, across varying project typologies, where design directly influences human experience.

Crafting a Sanctuary of Art and Mental Health Awareness at Peg’s Gallery 💚

We're incredibly proud to share one of our latest projects, Peg’s Gallery- a beautiful gallery designed to honor the legacy of Peg Morgan and her visionary work at Peg’s Foundation. Located in the vibrant First and Main district of downtown Hudson, Ohio, this project celebrates the powerful connection between art, beauty, and mental well-being.

In collaboration with Peninsula Architects, +Detail brought Peg’s Foundation’s mission to life by creating a welcoming environment that champions mental wellness and community engagement. The 9,500 sq. ft. space merges art and healing with communal galleries, flexible workspaces, and private offices—all thoughtfully designed with inclusivity and mental health in mind.

The art gallery on the first floor serves as a dynamic hub for community events, featuring movable walls and a mobile reception desk that allow the space to adapt to diverse needs while maintaining a calming aesthetic.

Every detail was crafted to reflect Peg’s legacy and the Foundation's unwavering commitment to improving lives through inclusive mental health support and awareness.

Peg’s Gallery is a beacon of hope, creativity, and healing for the Hudson community. We’re honored to have helped bring this vision to life—one that will inspire and uplift for years to come. ✨
