Offering a second iteration of this Wild Clay & Pit Firing experience- this time, an Autumnal version! I’m soooo excited. Spooky season, harvest season, is my absolute favourite.

Approach: I will guide you into hand building two pieces—one from wild clay I dug up and processed, and one from white raku clay. It’s a great time, sharing stories, meeting each other, and I’ll be offering some homemade desserts. Then, in two weeks, when the clay is ready for firing, we will reunite to transform them through smoke, ash and flame in an exciting pit firing on our land. A delicious dinner will be served as we prepare the pit and make that fire roar.

Wild Clay & Pit Firing- the FEAST component

When I went to a workshop led by The Halfway Homestead last year, she had incorporated a feast component halfway through the day. I loved that. I kept thinking about that part- how wonderful it is to break bread with others, especially others that you have just met. Actually, it reminded me of walking the Camino back in 2015, and all of the wonderful meals I shared with fellow pilgrims.

For my event, I gave myself the challenge of cooking using as much as I could from my own garden, or at the very least from the farms nearby. And, because I love to cook, it was all lovingly homemade. Here was my menu-

• Fresh pesto with basil, garlic scapes, walnuts, and nutritional yeast
• Homemade herbed labneh, made from yogurt I strained myself, with garlic scapes, green onion, dill, chives, parsley, and lemon zest
• Rosemary & olive oil sourdough loaf
• A garden salad with fresh lettuce, nasturtiums, calendula petals, tomatoes, and cucumber, dressed with a vinaigrette made from apple vinegar I fermented myself
• Roasted chicken
• Roasted dill potatoes
• Herb & feta quiche with sweet fennel, lamb’s quarters, parsley, chives, and dill
• Strawberry crumble focaccia for dessert 🍓
• Fresh lime, mint & honey lemonade

What a JOY it was to lead my first ever Wild Clay & Pit Firing workshop. Over two weeks, my lovely participants worked with Wild Clay and Raku Clay, preparing to fire directly in a big bonfire. Day 1 was so wonderful. We all met at my property. I showed everyone around my lovely barn studio and we discussed clay: some history, about different ways of working with it and firing methods, and some technique. Then, we had a fun afternoon of chatting, exchanging ideas and getting our hands in the clay, noticing the differences in the different clay bodies. To finish off the afternoon, I invited everyone in to a gorgeous seasonal and organic garden feast, with ingredients from my garden and the local farm. But I’ll tell you more about the food in a different post. There is so much to say, but I’ll let these awesome pictures taken by participant and photographer Alison | Heath & Fitness Coach speak for themselves. More posts to come!

Couple of moody night preview pictures from dreamy Part 2 of my Wild Clay and Pit Firing retreat. Our clay pieces are buried deep in the embers. The fire is roaring in the pit, and plumes of green, blue and purple dance from the combustibles we’ve added. Tomorrow morning we dig out our pieces from the ashes.

So many tests going on! Saggar, raku clay, oxides, fragile pieces. Here are the results from my thunderstorm tornado warning day pit firing (I only got to get the fire going about 45 mins before we got completely stormed out. Oops! Consequently the fire really didn’t get hot enough for most pieces. But watch until the end……..!)

Apologies for the background noise. My little one was listening to his yoto player. Bonus points if you know which story is being read on the recording!
