Residents at Maravilla Scottsdale now have more ways to move and recharge: on-demand fitness in a new wellness suite, red light saunas, a juice bar, and a terrace already hosting yoga classes and juice tastings. A golf simulator and game lounge keep the course setting in play whatever the Arizona weather, and Fore, a new restaurant with a wood-fired pizza oven, adds a fresh option alongside the existing Ironwood Grill and bistro.

The expansion brings 115 independent living residences and 48 casitas to the TPC Scottsdale community, with spaces that give residents more ways to move, rest, eat, and gather.

HKS led interior design, FF&E, and the redesign of select amenity spaces.

Most spaces affect our mood by accident. These were designed to do it on purpose. This World Mental Health Day, we’re looking at projects built for pause and choice.

🧠 Travelers at Gerald R. Ford International Airport can visit a sensory room that offers four zones, from a lakeside respite space to a full boarding rehearsal. Users reported an average 59.7% drop in anxiety after their visit.

🧠 Students at Smithfield Elementary School discover and restore at their own comfort level, thanks to a sensory well-being hub and outdoor sensory path.

🧠 Patients at Texas Behavioral Health Center use sensory labs tailored with touch, sound, imagery, and movement, alongside art, music, horticulture, and play therapy. With 292 beds for adults and children, the hospital expands access to psychiatric care across North Texas. It was also recently honored as Highly Commended in the Mental Health Project category at the 15th World Congress for Design and Health.

🧠 At Rosewood, on the campus of Prince William School in Oundle, UK, a repurposed building feels more like home than school for students experiencing emotionally based school avoidance. Some students who couldn’t leave their bedrooms before joining now attend regularly.

🧠 Sensa is a neuroinclusive hotel concept that moves guests between high- and low-sensory spaces, with room to reset in between.

Good design creates room to breathe.

Singapore has a long tradition of giving heritage buildings new life, from the shophouses of Duxton Road to the bank buildings of the central business district. HKS's office in the city has now called both home.

The team started in 2016 as three people in a shophouse. After growing to 45, it moved into The Quadrant, the 1920s-era former Kwangtung Provincial Bank. Teak upcycled from old houses, recycled mechanical systems, bamboo, and rattan carry that reuse ethic inside, and murals by local artists run throughout.

Sliding doors and modular furniture let the 5,016-square-foot space reshape itself around the work, with zones for focus, collaboration, rest, socialization, and ideation shaped by HKS research on brain-healthy workplaces. The office is on track for Green Mark and WELL certification.

Cancer treatment asks a lot of patients' time. There are weeks of appointments, many specialists, and long drives between them.

Well-informed design that prioritizes patient experience can give some of that time back.

At one medical center in Madison, Wis., patients can see multiple specialists and complete tests or treatment in a single visit. Cancer care shares the building with dozens of other specialties.

At a facility in Miami, Fla., infusion bays line glass walls facing the campus lakes and gardens. Covered terraces let patients and families step outside without leaving the treatment floor.

The addition of a radiation oncology center in rural Jasper, Ga. has reduced travel for residents across five nearby counties, bringing essential daily care closer to home and delivering thousands of treatments within its first year.

These are three very different scales of care with the same aim: closing the distance between patients and the care they need.

This year's World Architecture Day theme ends with two words: Build It.

For architects, residential design starts with questions like, what amenities are residences looking for? How can a residence tower respond to the climate, community and culture?

A few of our projects show what those answers can look like:

NoMaCNTR, Washington, D.C. — 500 homes on the former site of a Greyhound bus terminal, in one of the city's fastest-growing neighborhoods

Astra Tower, Salt Lake City — filtered air piped into every unit, and exterior lighting that tells the wider community how clean the outdoor air is

700 River, Austin — 409-units in a 48-story tower whose shaded, planted façade is designed to cut energy use and offers elevated amenities overlooking Lady Bird Lake

The Pullman, Nashville — a 29-story tower on a once-vacant block, now creates a energetic, vibrant and distinct link to the surrounding Gulch District

One Residence, Dubai — curving balconies that catch the wind and block the sun, in forms inspired by traditional Bedouin weaving

HALL Arts Residences, Dallas — the first WELL Gold-certified multifamily high-rise in Texas, set beside a public sculpture walk in the nation's largest urban arts district

Made for Salt Lake City ❄️ ️

When sunlight hits the white facade at the top of Astra Tower, it glimmers like the surface of the Great Salt Lake and the snow on the peaks above the city. The design team chose the material for its performance and weight, and that quality made it the right fit for Utah's tallest building.

Salt Lake City had little high-rise precedent and few fabricators equipped for a 41-story tower of this scale. It took some innovation, with the answer being a hybrid system, with GFRC delivered on panels and every pane of glass installed from inside the building by Steel Encounters, Inc. Behind the skin, Thornton Tomasetti engineered the structure to meet the region's seismic demands.

The Architect's Newspaper takes a close look at how the facade and structure came together.

The average hospital ED wait time is nearly 3 hours. In Sunrise and Lighthouse Point, Fla., it's 10 to 30 minutes.

HKS designed two freestanding emergency departments for Broward Health to bring high-acuity care closer to the communities that need it, with flexibility built into every space to offer solutions for patients and staff:

⚕️ Multipurpose rooms that flex from trauma care to patient-of-size accommodations, or isolation to behavioral health.
⚕️ A split-flow approach that allows tracks for low-acuity patients, who may have a mild, stable or not immediately dangerous medical condition. Higher-acuity patients are moved into dedicated treatment spaces.
⚕️ A dedicated pediatric entrance and exam rooms at Sunrise.
⚕️ An attached physician clinic in Lighthouse Point, extending access into primary care.

Two freestanding ED sites with one goal in mind: care that meets people where they are.

At Jackson Memorial Hospital and two new Broward Health emergency departments in Florida, HKS designers used years of patient arrival and wait-time data to size each department for real demand and reasonable surges instead of worst-case volume. That data shaped split-flow treatment models and dedicated entrances by patient population, so staff can move quickly and patients still feel cared for, not processed.

Maria Rios, HKS Miami Studio Practice Manager, Health, who once spent more than a day in Jackson Memorial's old ED with her brother, helped design its replacement.

"If you have a happier nurse, a nurse who can be more effective, you have better outcomes for your patients," she said.

Emergency departments should be designed for the capacity to handle a surge, and enough design intention that patients never feel like a number.

When you're in the business of creating exceptional places for others, your own workplace should set the standard.

HKS designed Cousins' new Regional Office at 3350 Peachtree to be an expression of how Cousins works, collaborates, and welcomes prospective tenants.

Transparency became a central part of that story. Open glass, a continuous ceiling plane, and visually connected collaboration and conferencing spaces create an environment where activity is visible, and the energy of the team becomes part of the experience.

The office is a home for Cousins' local and regional teams and a living demonstration of the workplace experience they are helping create for tenants throughout their portfolio of properties.

Located within the Cousins-owned 3350 Peachtree tower in Buckhead, Atlanta, the new regional office puts that experience on display.
