The Double Rye

First the whole: two walnut rings carrying a top of crotch mahogany. Then the top itself, where the figure runs from the center like a flame, framed in walnut and a thin line of gold. Then the base, where that line returns at the edge of a stepped plinth.

Chow | Ebonized oak

Black, but not flat. The oak keeps its open grain, and the stain settles into it rather than covering it. The leg ends in a small hoof, a quiet reference to a much older form. Restrained elegance in desk form.

Carolyn | Shale oak, brushed bronze

Oak in a quiet, weathered gray, laid in a sunburst from the center out. The edge is banded in brushed bronze and set with rivets, a small detail that rewards the second look.

Some of the best work is the kind no one sees. Beneath the minimalist surface of this Parsons table, a lattice of hand-built structure is integrated into the frame.

Closed, it is the table you know. Extended to banquet length, it is a long, unbroken stretch of dining surface with a single simple support added and not a hint of the effort behind it.

Before the finish, there is the grain. Meticulously selected and placed, the walnut veneer is laid so that each figure answers the next, a balanced composition where the wood's natural beauty is the whole point.

Hand-planed walnut, taken as dark as the wood will go, and bound at the edge in a burnished brass metal accent. This round Landy table is all structure and presence. Pair with Spanish Renaissance Revival dining chairs and a picturesque mountain view for the perfect ski lodge breakfast room.

New from the bench: the Regent bed. Crotch walnut, cut so the grain opens like a plume at the center of the headboard, and edged in Coromandel ebony, dark and striped as a tortoiseshell comb.
