Rain on the farm today 🌧️

There's a quiet kind of beauty to the Hill Country on a gray day. The brick paths shine, the mums and fall blooms in the nursery look even brighter, and the whole place slows down a little.

It's also just what this season needs. Fall rain helps freshly sown wildflower seeds settle into the soil, a good start toward spring's bluebonnets. If you've been meaning to plant your own, this is the week to do it.

Out in Fredericksburg today? Come in from the drizzle. Wander the covered nursery, browse the gift shop, grab lunch at the BrewBonnet Deli, or settle into the courtyard for a slow afternoon.

Just a little Hill Country breeze through the cosmos. Watch for a minute. 🌼
Save this one for spring. Cosmos are one of the easiest flowers to grow from seed, and we'll have the seed when you're ready.

Last call for fall planting.

Here in Texas, rain is in the forecast later this week, and that's the best help a newly sown wildflower seed can get. If bluebonnets and spring color are on your list, now is the time to get seed on the ground, ahead of the rain.

Farther north? You can still plant now, too. In colder regions (USDA Zones 1–6), a late-fall sowing is called dormant seeding: the seed rests in the soil all winter and comes up on its own at the first sign of spring. You won't see sprouts this fall, and that's exactly how it should work. The key is getting seed down while you can still rake the soil, before the ground freezes. Native and regional mixes are the best choice for a fall sowing up north.

What to plant now:
🌼 Texas and the South: Texas Bluebonnet, Texas/Oklahoma Wildflower Mix, All Native Texas/Oklahoma Wildflower Mix, Southeastern Wildflower Mix
🌼 North: North Central Wildflower Mix, Northeastern Wildflower Mix

Rake lightly, scatter, then press the seed into the soil by walking or rolling over it. Cover no deeper than 1/16 inch. Seed orders of $75 or more ship free, or stop by the farm and pick some up.

Apparently, Texas enjoyed its three-day fall trial and has decided to reconsider the subscription. 🍂☀️ Even our skeletons are still working on their tans.

We're keeping the faith out here in the Hill Country. The pumpkins are piled high, and the Talavera is bringing all the color the weather forgot to bring.

Warm or not, this is planting season. Fall is when Texas wildflower seed goes in the ground. Sow your bluebonnets and other favorites now, let winter do its quiet work, and come spring you'll have color. Stop by and we'll help you choose the right mix for your spot.

While you're here:
🎃 Pumpkin and flower picks to dress up the porch or the table
🏺 Talavera pots, planters and pieces in every color
🌱 Fall-ready plants in the nursery
🛍️ Seasonal finds in the gift shop
🥪 Lunch at the BrewBonnet Deli

Come spend an afternoon with us. Sweater optional.

There's no better teacher than someone who has spent more than 50 years in the fields.

In our new video, Wildseed Farms founder John Thomas sits down to talk fall planting. He explains why wildflowers sprout in the fall, grow quietly through the winter and bloom in spring, why he plants by the calendar instead of waiting on rain, and his three-year approach to finding which flowers will be happiest on your land.

If you've ever planted wildflower seed and wondered why it didn't come up, this one is worth a cup of coffee. There's still time to plant this season.
