Getting after it today.

Everything is cut, welt is made, and now it’s time to start sewing.

There’s a lot of work that happens before you ever see a finished cushion. Getting everything cut and organized like this makes the rest of the job move.

This is the part of upholstery I really enjoy — once everything is figured out, you quit thinking about it and just let experience take over.

A little behind the scenes on a project for Taj Mahal in Louisville.

This is the part of upholstery nobody really sees. Before we can sew the finished cover, we have to figure out how the whole thing is going to go together — patterns, seam locations, alignment marks, welt and zipper placement.

Once we get everything right, we make permanent master patterns so we can reproduce the same cover again.

The sewing is only part of the job. A lot of the work happens before we ever sit down at the machine.

From curbside to backyard.

A customer found these patio swivel chairs sitting on the side of the road. Instead of hauling them to the landfill, she brought them to CRU Upholstery.

I refinished the frames in flat black, replaced the worn sling seating, and made new custom outdoor cushions using the original inserts to keep the project within her budget.

Not every project needs to be a complete restoration. Sometimes it's about making smart decisions and giving quality furniture another chance.

These patio chairs weren’t ready for the scrap pile—they just needed the right shop.

We stripped them down, refinished the frames with a fresh black coating, and fabricated brand-new replacement slings from scratch.

Patio sling furniture looks simple, but getting the fit right takes careful measuring, pattern work, and precision sewing. When it’s finished correctly, the fabric installs under the proper tension and gives years of service.

Another one headed out the door.

I really like how this one turned out. The red diamond stitching with the ivory inserts gives it a classic look without being over the top.

People usually see the finished seats, but they don’t see all the measuring, pattern work, test fitting, and sewing that happens before they ever look like this.

That’s the part I enjoy—taking a pile of materials and turning it into something that fits like it came from the factory.

On to the next one.
