From the bayous of Louisiana to the backwaters of the Irrawaddy in Myanmar, from the lagoons of West Africa to the billabongs of northern Australia, mangroves are making a dramatic and unexpected comeback.

After decades of losses, mangrove trees are gaining ground on coastlines around the world, often in places they have never grown before. Paradoxically, scientists say, warming temperatures and the destruction of inland forests are helping to power the revival.

Peatlands are among the most important natural climate solutions in the world because peatland soils (also called histosols) store vast amounts of carbon accumulated over millennia. Peatlands also support biodiversity, improve water quality, and reduce flood risk. Peatland soils are also abundant in several areas of the state, including within Wisconsin’s portion of the Lake Michigan Basin.

The WI Wetlands Assoc announces a new project to establish a Peatlands Conservation Partnership in the Lake Michigan basin. The project is a collaboration between Wisconsin Wetlands Association, The Nature Conservancy Wisconsin, and The Pew Charitable Trusts.

Peatlands are among the most important natural climate solutions in the world. They store vast amounts of carbon accumulated over millennia, while also supporting biodiversity, improving water quality, and reducing flood risk.

As with many of our breeding plans, our Crane Conservation Department staff utilized assisted reproduction techniques to produce fertile eggs. Only one of the females, Gimli, was selected to produce fertile eggs so that we could be confident in the chick’s parentage.

The cat, called Tilcayo by local communities, is part of a group called tiger cats found across much of South America. ‌It was found in Bolivia's lush Yungas forest, a mountainous region where forests are often covered by clouds and surrounded by high humidity, according to researchers. It measures about 18 inches (46 cm) long and weighs around 3 pounds (1.4 kg), making it smaller than the average domestic cat.

A diminutive wild cat that inhabits Bolivia's cloud forest has been identified as a previously unknown species, marking the first time a new living cat species has been formally named and described in more than a century.
