The answer is pumpkins. Obviously. 🎃 Happy Halloween!

Unless you’re performing surgery in your kitchen, we probably don’t need THAT many recessed lights.

Listen, I’m not saying get rid of them entirely. They serve a purpose. But relying on them for every ounce of light in your home? That’s where I draw the line.

Lighting should come from multiple sources at different heights. Lamps, sconces, pendants, you name it. That’s what gives a room warmth, comfort, and texture.

The goal is ambiance, people. Not an interrogation.

Plan for what you have. Leave room for what you haven’t fallen in love with yet. Because the best finds rarely come with a heads-up.

Meet Katie and Stephanie. Two very talented designers who, for reasons I still don't fully understand, have willingly signed up for years of my crazy ideas, changing timelines, antique hunting, job site visits, installations, and the occasional "I have a thought..." that turns into a whole thing.

Here's the thing about this job. No two days look alike. Plans change, timelines shift, and sometimes we're figuring things out while standing in the middle of a construction site. You need people who can think on their feet, problem-solve, get creative, and aren't afraid to tell you when your brilliant idea might need a little rethinking.

These two bring all of that AND their own incredible talents and perspectives to the table.

They've been on this journey with me for years, and somewhere along the way, they've become family. I genuinely love what we create together, but just as importantly, I really like the people I get to create it with.

Swipe for a little behind-the-scenes look at the designers who make up KCD. And yes, we're actually working in most of these photos. Mostly.

What you see: the finished room.

What I see: Is the rug stopping in the right place? Is the wallpaper too much of a contrast? Is that light too high? Too low and someone might hit their head? Do we need another material layered in here? And approximately a billion other questions I asked myself before we even started (and that I couldn’t fit into this graphic…).

The finished photo is pretty. My interior designer brain is… busy.

Day 1: The before. So much potential!!!

Day 45: DEMO! Things are happening!!!

Day ?: Is... anything happening? A WHOLE lotta days with plumbing, electrical, insulation, windows and a lion and tiger and bear oh my! So many holdups …..

Day 206: I have forgotten what this room used to look like. The blueboard and plaster are up - yippie! We’re almost there, right?

Day 298: Cabinetry! Trim partial done! I suddenly remember why I thought this was a good idea!!!

Day 460-ish: Oh. Right. THIS is why we did it.

The hardest part of a renovation is often the middle, when the dramatic demo is over but the pretty stuff hasn’t started showing up yet. Progress gets slower and much less “Instagrammable”, but that doesn’t mean work isn’t happening. So many trades and a place for so many holdups like happened on this job.

So consider this your friendly designer warning: if you’ve never renovated before, prepare yourself for the middle. Prepare for a REAL timeline not a fake TV timeline. ( Did I say that ?? )

It’s not glamorous. It’s not fast. But eventually, you get to take this photo and its all so worth it.

Tiny space. Naturally, we made approximately zero tiny design decisions.

Similar to the living room, we searched for this wallpaper for a LONG time because murals can go from interesting to “why is the wall yelling at me?” very quickly. Swipe to see a few of the options we tried along the way before ultimately landing on this stunning Rebel Walls mural.

It had the depth and movement I wanted, but with a contemporary edge that draws you in without swallowing the room whole.

Then came the stone, the swan, and a mix of gold finishes because matching everything perfectly felt far too predictable.

And that’s really the point. In a small space, why default to what’s expected? There may appear to be a lot happening in here, but every layer was chosen to balance the next.

Method to the madness, people. I promise!!!

If I had told myself at the beginning of this project that teal, rust, and all these warm neutrals were going to live happily ever after together, I might have had questions. And yet, here we are.

What you don’t see? The wallpaper search was INTENSE. Hundreds of teal options, Dye lot cuttings that kept coming in completely wrong, and what I will lovingly refer to as a secret disaster happening behind the scenes.

Then there was the rug. Fully custom because apparently I enjoy making things harder for myself, but we needed the colors AND sizing to be just right. (thanks Landry and Arcari for always putting up with me!)

The asymmetrical light fixture brought in something a little more artistic, while the modern banquette helped ground the whole thing and give all that color somewhere to land.

A lot of tiny decisions. A slightly unhinged amount of teal wallpaper. One very happy designer at the end of it.

Look who made the pages of New England Home Magazine! Very excited to finally share this project, because keeping a finished house to myself is not exactly my strong suit. There’s a LOT to talk about with this one, and we’re just getting started.
