method studio architecture | interiors | planning As Method Studio recently celebrated our fifteen-year anniversary, we look back with great appreciation and humility.

Our three founding partners; Becky Hawkins, Joe Smith, and Kelly Morgan, struck out on their own in 2007 with a goal to create a firm that was balanced, diverse, and off-the-charts creative with a new set of rules: collaborate/imagine/ listen with all of your senses while keeping things balanced and pragmatic. From that, we grew, welcomed more design innovators, and built genuine, valued relationships internally and with our clients. “Our goal has always been to build a practice centered on design to inspire and enhance our community while creating a work/life balance in our firm culture. That focus has resulted in humbling and rapid growth” said Becky Hawkins. Joe Smith adds, “We wanted to do things differently, with authentic design and honest dialogue with our clients. Our staff is integral to our success and their voice makes a difference.”

We have grown our firm with a 98% repeat client base, awarded “Best of State” in commercial architecture in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2021; been awarded firm of the year 2021 by American General Contractor’s, by IIDA and WIA (Women In Architecture) in 2017, and now employ over 96 professionals with offices in Salt Lake City, St. George and Rexburg, Idaho. Method Studio has become one of the largest firms in Utah while maintaining a small-firm culture. Breaking through the traditional architecture firms dominating the Utah market was no small matter. In a field where the firm portfolio is often the basis of winning new commissions, carving out the toeholds that enable a practice to grow is challenging. Particularly, with the economic downturn that occurred only a few short years after the firm began. Gradually, job by job, Method began to establish a reputation for excellence. When we obtained new clients we worked hard to exceed their expectations and build strong working relationships. We extended the same respect and courtesy to our collaborative consulting partners, which has enhanced our reputation and increased our ability to compete. Method Studio is widely considered a trustworthy organization that listens carefully and cares deeply about our clients with a sincere belief that good design matters.

A fresh chapter for the McKay Library!

Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of celebrating the ribbon cutting for the newly renovated McKay Library at BYU-Idaho!

Spanning three floors, the renovation creates refreshed spaces for studying, collaboration, tutoring, and testing, along with enhancements to the library’s main collection and Special Collections archives.

Thoughtfully completed in phases to keep the library serving students throughout construction, this transformation marks an exciting new chapter for a space that plays such an important role in campus life.

We’re grateful to BYU-Idaho and the entire project team for the opportunity to help bring this vision to life!

Today, we celebrate World Architecture Day and the people behind the places that shape how we live, work, learn, and connect.

We believe architecture has the power to do more than create spaces, it can strengthen communities, inspire people, and make a lasting impact. We’re proud to be part of a profession dedicated to creating places that make a difference.

Happy World Architecture Day!

More than a building, an instrument for what happens within it.

At the ribbon cutting for the new SUU Music Center, our Founding Partner Joe Smith reflected on an idea that helped shape the project: “Over time, we began to think about the building as more than a building, but more as an instrument in and of itself. An instrument does not create the music. It creates the conditions that allow a musician to express something. We hope this building can do the same.”

Inspired by the rhythm and harmony of music and the colors, textures, and formations of Southern Utah, the 51,250 SF Music Center creates a new home for students, educators, performers, and audiences at Southern Utah University.

From its acoustically refined concert hall to rehearsal spaces, recording and music technology, faculty studios, practice rooms, and gathering spaces, each part of the building was designed to support the music and learning that will fill it for generations to come.

We’re grateful to Southern Utah University, DFCM, Layton Construction, our design consultants, and the many craftspeople and partners whose talent and care brought this vision to life.

Transforming history into a vibrant space where innovation and collaboration come alive.

The adaptive reuse of Salt Lake City’s historic Newspaper Agency Center into Traeger Headquarters includes nearly 24,000 sq. ft. of mezzanine space, training and demo kitchens, a customer lounge, retail store, flexible indoor/outdoor workspaces, and a 5,000 sq. ft. rooftop deck.

Delighted to turn history into a unique environment that inspires connection and creativity.

Earlier this year, our Raleigh team had the opportunity to reimagine a portion of the Raleigh greenway through a design competition focused on the future of this rapidly evolving area. Our concept, “Rooted in Raleigh,” looks beyond connectivity to explore how the greenway can create identity, belonging, and a true destination for the community.

In collaboration with , we approached the challenge with a shared focus on creating lasting roots and meaningful connections to place. We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the conversation and excited to see how this part of the greenway continues to evolve.

A few of our team members spent some time giving back in Southern Utah with Switchpoint Community Resource Center.

We helped harvest a few garden towers, where fresh produce is grown to support Swithpoint’s pantry, market, and local families. It was a hands-on opportunity to step outside the office, spend time together, and support Switchpoint’s work toward health and self-reliance in our community.

We’re grateful for organizations like Switchpoint and for the opportunity to lend a hand!

Building the Future of Healthcare Education

Designed to inspire learning, wellness, and connection, Bridgerland Technical College’s Health Sciences Building is more than a place to train future healthcare professionals, it’s an environment intentionally crafted to support their success.

Guided by the principles of therapeutic milieu, the design uses natural materials, abundant daylight, intuitive wayfinding, and open views between programs to create a welcoming and collaborative learning experience while putting healthcare education on display.

As the first new building in the college’s 50-year history, the facility represents a major investment in both the college and the future of healthcare across Cache Valley. State-of-the-art simulation labs and purpose-built learning environments help prepare students with the skills and confidence they’ll carry into their careers.

More than a building, it’s a place where Utah’s future healthcare workforce begins.
