"Art is important. In Maslow's hierarchy of needs he suggests that our aesthetic needs are related to both self esteem and self actualization. And isn't that true. The sense of accomplishment we get when we learn a new task or finish a piece of work. It makes so much sense. Art and beauty are far more than the trivial needs we seek after we have been fed and clothed. They are essential to us as human beings. They help us see the world around us, deepen our thinking, and comfort and soothe us."

"People tell me all the time they love nature. Artists say they are inspired by nature. Some even say it is their temple. It is, of course, easy to love. When we walk the marsh or the woods it brings us back to the simplest things in life. It brings us closer to the source of all things. There are few distractions, and those that come are majestic. A hawk diving in a field, three eagles flying high, a coyote across the creek. They too are reminders of how simply the other creatures in the world live. That all they ever need are the basics of life. Myself, on the other hand am more of a gatherer than a hunter. Though I aim to live simply, well, the creatures put me to shame."

“So much of my life comes from my making, my creative life, from beauty. It is a sustaining force in my everyday. It takes the ordinary and gives it a glow. And I wake up every morning looking for this, thinking about how I can transform my own small world into something larger so that it resonates.”

“My walk is new every day partly because of the generations of woodpeckers that light up the poles on occasion, partly because every day I look for something new. A new shape in the seedpods, my shadow on the pavement, the way the trees are growing in the ditches. I am always looking to see what is blooming and what is in season even in the winter. There is always something happening in the sky, in the fields, and in our lives. There is no routine that does not have a sacredness about it.“

"Sometimes I learn beautiful things from a poem (thank you Alden Nowlan, Mary Oliver, Naomi Shabib Nye), from a song, from a man in a parking lot, or a woman in the studio. Sometimes I learn when I swim and the sun is a red circle above the sea. Sometimes I learn the same things over and over again because I need to. Sometimes I don't catch on as quickly as I should. But I learn. I am grateful for it. I am grateful for a brain that brings new synapses together and surprises me with a new thought or idea. For books and libraries, and teachers, and precious moments. For conversations on road trips, at kitchen tables, and walks down dirt roads."

"So seeking joy has been confused with seeking big things. It is not about a bow on a car, or an airplane ride. That is just a game show. It is about seeing the good in others. Joy is found in the bloom. When I watch a young girl grow into a strong woman, or a young man find the tenderness of adulthood I feel a kind of joy."
