THE REAL LIFE OF A DESIGNER & PROJECT MANAGER

As many will have realised this isn’t your standard interior designer’s Instagram account.

Yes, we do love sharing photographs of beautiful, finished rooms, but what we really love is showing the reality of life behind the scenes at Anderson Haysom Design.

And I think the contents of my bag say it all

Architectural drawings, wallpaper samples, paintbrushes, a ruler, tape measure, tools, receipts, a bit of Chanel, Clarins hand cream and the occasional emergency chocolate snack!

Because the reality of being a designer and project manager isn’t all fabric swatches and choosing pretty colours.

It’s building sites, contractors, problem-solving, measurements, endless decisions and somehow keeping a hundred different things moving in the right direction.

One minute you’re discussing structural works, the next you’re choosing wallpaper, and somewhere in between you’re trying to remember where you put your car keys!

Welcome to the glamorous world of real interior design.

SUNDAY SILLINESS… OR IS IT?

What am I up to?

A ball of garden twine, a pencil, a pair of scissors and a tape measure.

No lasers, no fancy equipment, just a little old-fashioned geometry!

Long before CAD drawings and modern setting-out equipment, master craftsmen used these very same principles to create extraordinary architectural details.

But there’s rather more to this than drawing a circle!

When working in a room with existing historical features, the first thing I look for is the dominant measurement, the proportional rhythm that runs through the original architecture.

And this Victorian room has one. 100mm.

It’s a measurement that repeats through the existing architectural detailing, and it’s the starting point for what comes next.

If you hadnt already guessed I’m setting out a ceiling rose

The new light fitting measures 300mm in diameter, so I’ve designed the rose at 500mm.

A ratio of 5:3, leaving a beautifully balanced 100mm of visible rose around the light fitting.

Not guesswork. Not an arbitrary measurement picked from a catalogue. A deliberate decision based on the proportions already established in the room.

And here’s something they don’t always teach you in the classroom.

You can study proportions, ratios and architectural theory until the cows come home, but hard facts on a page don’t always translate to what the eye sees.

Sometimes you have to stand in the room, study its architecture, understand its character and trust the experience you’ve gained over years of working with historic buildings.

Good design isn’t simply about making things fit. It’s about making them belong.

And sometimes all that takes is a pencil and a bit of garden twine.

Don your hard hat for a site visit- THIS IS RESTORATION DESIGN.

(No pillow plumping or fluffy fabric in sight… not yet anyway 😂)

Before the colour, the wallpaper, the gilding, the beautiful fabrics and all the details that will eventually make this room sing, comes this.

Restoration design starts with understanding the building itself. Its structure, its fabric, what can be retained, what needs repairing and what must be resolved before the decorative scheme can begin.

It may not look particularly beautiful right now, but the finished room will be.

The specification waiting in the wings includes rich colour from Farrow & Ball, Little Greene and Mylands, William Morris wallpaper, restored original details and a gilded bay ceiling.

We already know where we’re going.

Right now, we’re making sure everything underneath it is worthy of what comes next.

One of the most beautiful features of this room isn’t the furniture or the colour palette,it’s the light. As the leaves outside dance in the breeze, dappled sunlight drifts gently through the double voile blind, washing the room in a soft, ever-changing glow. It’s a reminder that the finest interiors aren’t static; they evolve with the passing hours of the day.

Every memorable café begins with an idea.

For that idea was not simply to create somewhere to enjoy coffee, but to create a place of discovery.

Inspired by the hidden gardens, curious pathways and secret worlds of Alice in Wonderland, the concept centres around a simple journey:

Discovery.
Wonder.
The Rabbit Hole.

Guests arrive through a hidden courtyard garden before stepping into an intimate interior wrapped in botanical foliage, warm lighting and layers of texture. The result is a café that feels tucked away from the everyday world, atmospheric, welcoming and just a little bit magical.

The Wonderland references are deliberately subtle, woven into the experience rather than shouted from the rooftops. A smiling teacup logo, hidden curiosities, vintage details and playful moments reward those who look closely.

More than a café, Café Fou was imagined as a destination in its own right, a place to pause, linger and escape for a little while.

Designs signed off today.

In two weeks we begin the transformation of this Victorian flat into an exclusive holiday let.

The brief is simple: create a calm, contemporary and refined space that feels effortless to occupy and difficult to leave.

Soft coastal tones, carefully considered lighting, natural textures and practical storage solutions will work together to create a welcoming retreat for guests whilst respecting the character of the building.

Now comes the exciting part.

Exciting things to come for this room.

Yes, this is an AI render, and yes, I know it can be a contentious subject.

But in truth, the design world has been using CGI and visual concept imagery for years. With the advancements in technology, the possibilities of what we can now create are almost limitless.

The reason for using it is simple: it helps us help our clients truly envision their space before the building process begins. It allows concepts to come to life, decisions to be made with confidence, and unwanted surprises to be reduced long before work starts on site.

It also allows us to manage projects more effectively and work closely with craftsmen, ensuring everyone understands exactly what we are working towards.

Harrow Road - From Concept to Completion

It began as a house untouched for over 40 years.
Then stripped back completely to allow us to reimagine how the home could truly work for modern family life.

This central kitchen vantage point became the heart of the concept. From here, every connection matters, the flow between cooking, dining, living, utility, and garden was designed to work in quiet conversation with one another.

The downstairs layout was planned to maximise visibility, fluidity, and ease of movement across every zone. The utility was thoughtfully built beneath the stairs, keeping household tasks discreetly away from the kitchen whilst maintaining direct access to the garden.

Herringbone flooring was carried throughout to create continuity, warmth, and structure, while the kitchen itself was designed to feel calm, functional, and visually connected to the wider family space.

This forms part of our Empathetic Storytelling Design approach- designing homes through the emotional and practical lens of the people who live within them.

A design for modern family living: connected, efficient, and beautifully human.

Lansdowne Place - from concept to completion.

One of our period property renovation and resale projects, designed with the intention of maximising the beauty and value of the home while respecting its architectural heritage.

We focused on restoring and celebrating the original period features. From the fireplaces and proportions of the principal rooms to the overall sense of elegance the property deserved to retain. Heritage-led colours and carefully considered finishes were selected through research, ensuring the interiors felt both authentic and refined.

At the same time, the kitchens and bathrooms were fully modernised to meet the expectations of today’s buyer, creating a home that feels both timeless and practical.

Beautiful homes should honour their history while being ready for their next chapter.
