Every creative with a sewing machine or some glue 🤣

Kantha scraps are the worst! Even the really little pieces I keep make great patches and can be sewn together to create…. Something. One day…

Tell me your ideas for these kantha fabric remnants, I really do love to hear them! 🤗

This massively exciting box of scraps arrived today! I was expecting small pieces of kantha offcuts!
These scraps are usually discarded when old kantha are turned into jackets and bags and stuff in Jaipur…

But this stuff is craft GOLD!

I don’t generate enough scraps and offcuts from my kantha cushion-making activities to keep the shop stocked up with craft packs, so I asked around for any going spare in Jaipur to keep the up with demand. And I think this might be the most exciting that happened this week!

These pieces need a sort and a bit of a clean but I’m thinking I’ll just list a lot of them as individual pieces or collections of several complimentary ones for larger sewing projects.

What do you reckon?

Do you get that childish excitement too when you see a box full of creative potential? 🤗🤗🤗

I like my drop system, it kind of evolved out of necessity rather than any sort of well engineered marketing strategy 🤣

The other factor is my ability to get completely sidetracked if I don’t have an impossible deadline.

I have to set a date and commit by telling people or else I WOULD easily end up with a hundred new ideas, a stack of to-do’s, and nothing finished or listed 🤦‍♀️

So I’ll carry on “dropping” new collections of things every couple of weeks because for now I think it works ok 🤞

I’m really looking forward to adding new things though and I hope that doesn’t put anyone off! We already did a few of the rugs which were a success (there are more waiting for cleaning), and there’s a summer’s worth of treasure finds to share later in September…

I’d love to know what you think. Tell me in the comments below 👇

Some of this vintage indigo cotton sneaked its way onto my project pile 😜🫢

This piece really caught my eye. It’s just GLORIOUSLY filthy, there’s dirt and stains and age and tears and overall feeling that it’s been well used and would be very at home in a new life as something a bit grungy and casual.
I think it’s that irresistible James Dean fixing a motorbike kind of appeal haha 💕🔧😎

So, this indigo fabric comes from the back panels of traditional old bedspreads from Laos. I don’t know what was on the front, most likely something more decorative but this simple hand loomed feel is doing it for me 💙

All the strips are about 40cm wide, woven from hand spun cotton. Some of it might actually be h**p or ramie though. It’s pretty old.

But yes, I am definitely feeling the slouchy 3/4 length trousers for this piece! I have a great pattern I took from another pair so what do you reckon?
I think there’s enough fabric there, I’m not sure but I can always piece in a contrast bit 🤔💙💙💙💙

And I will give it a wash first 🫧🤣

What else would you make?

How many spare duvets do you have?

Or spare cushions? Or even one of those foldable spare beds… 🤔🛌

Yup I made a few more ###L Super Size floor cushions out of the old kantha quilts that were sat on the project pile.

And I LOVE them! I don’t have one myself at home yet but it’s on my wish list ❤️

Next up is testing whether one could fit the outdoor cushions before the torrential rain starts 🤔⛈️

I do have a few super-size wool filings though too in case ramming the contents of a laundry cupboard into one isn’t your idea of good multi purpose storage…

There are only a few though, so if you missed out last time this is your chance!

What do you reckon you’d fit into one of these?

Let’s call these things what they are 👇

If it looks like art, displays like art, gives you a sense of awe like art, connects you to a human story or a philosophy like art or just speaks to you for some undefined reason…

It’s ART

Even if it wasn’t meant to just be displayed as art. The use, history and the story, the perception, context that gives it artistic meaning.

I’ve been accused by some of perpetuating colonial repression by appreciating another culture’s craft.

When I hang these aged, timeworn vintage Bengali quilts with all their history and stories revealed by time I think of that and that makes them even more poignant to me.

Maybe some people think that art only belongs where it was made. That another culture has no right to see beauty and meaning in a woman’s creation, no matter where it’s from.

I strongly disagree. So expect more of this and I’ll be fully prepared for the debate 😍

So if you want to call something art then go ahead. You don’t need my blessing but you have it anyway 😍

Tell me what art you hang on your walls 👇

This is what photoshoot day (well, last minute 10pm before a drop day 🤣) looks like 📸

I feel the need to show these off because so many photos of these beauties so often never get seen - they’re gone before they even hit the website properly, never to be seen again 👀

That’s because all you gorgeous lovely people on the mailing list get there first! I never know which will get snapped up and which will hang around, so it’s a complete surprise every time at this end 🫣

I’m also honoured and so so grateful for everyone who has joined, I never expected so many of you to hang around for my bi-weekly kantha drops, treasure hunting waffle and whatever else pops into my head at the last minute 🥰🥰🥰
And your messsges really do make my day - from people just browsing and getting inspired to great suggestions. I feel like my job isn’t to sell, it’s just to be here for a community of people who share a love of handmade, unusual and unique things with stories 😍

These kantha beauties will all be in tomorrow’s preview. Expect your 9am UK time email and anything left goes live in the website at 9pm UK time 🕰️

If you’re not on the mailing list it’s free to join, no subscription, cancel anyone, come for early previews, the odd member-only sale and random recommendations - or just to browse some colourful inspo you might never see again 🌈

CONFESSION: I used to be an all-neutrals gal 🫣
Then came along all these Indian colour combos that still surprise me! 🧡🤎🩷🩵💛❤️💜

Would I have got excited about a purple and yellow pairing five years ago? Or splashing a bit of orange around amongst some greens and beiges? Not until I saw it 🌈🥰

But what I love most about these kantha quilts is how you can play with colour without painting walls, buying a new sofa or worrying if something will go with everything else.

I still keep a neutral background. We rent and work like, a thousand hours a week so I really can’t be bothered to paint walls and commit to one look that might not go with the peach and black I’m trying to photograph today.

How I manage the problem: I own several mostly white kantha that I use to add texture in the background (like the antique one on the sofa) because to-date I haven’t found a single colour that works with every other colour combo under the sun.

Then the colours add the drama 🩷🩵💜💛❤️

Maybe you’ve found your colour combos that speak to you and you can commit to them…… My problem is I love them all 😂🌈

Which of these surprised you?

My interior style is pretty much “whatever I feel like today”

If that’s you say hi! 👋 🥰

And double hi if you’re into anything vintage, one of a kind, textured and a bit unusual 👋👋

I have my own well-used stash of vintage kantha quilts ready to deploy at a moment’s mood swing but…

Guess which one of these I’ll be keeping 🤔?

Clue: It’s the one you won’t notice unless I point it out 🔍

Which would you keep?

I wasn’t going to post this because these kinds of informational stories don’t usually get the attention they deserve - even though they’re way more important (I think!) than showing you a perfectly styled room with a kantha draped over a sofa.

But I don’t care, this one deserves a story post 😍 So if anyone swipes all the way through, if one single person learns something interesting or gets inspired to find out more then that’ll make my day.

The elements of a good tale are there:

❤️ Love (I’d like to think), or at least the anticipation of marriage

🪡 Community and tradition and the patient, skilful mastery of a craft.

😈 The dark spectre of a colonial authority repressing culture and tradition

🤗 The survival of creativity in the face of challenges

🫧 A gripping “will it make it?” finale

🌅 And hopefully a Happily Ever After ending

Please excuse the artistic license (I have been accused of perpetuating colonial violence by appreciating foreign craft before 🤣🤣)… but this is my story and it does have a factual backbone! And this is why I’d happily keep this quilt in my collection.

Did anything in this story surprise you?
