With planning limiting how far we could extend this Harpenden home, the design needed to make every metre of the new footprint count.

The pitched roof allowed us to create a large vaulted ceiling with exposed steelwork, bringing height and architectural interest to the new open-plan living space, while a large picture window, five-metre slimline sliding doors and glazed gable draw natural light deep into the room and open up views across the established garden.

With different ceiling heights and profiles across the space, the lighting was carefully planned too. Warm white recessed spotlights create individual zones for cooking, eating and relaxing, which can be independently controlled and dimmed from one master panel.

Outside, the change in level became part of the design. Generous steps lead down from the new patio and are deep enough to double as informal seating, while a more private area to one side creates space for lounging and BBQs without interrupting the main outlook.

Rather than simply adding square footage, the aim was to change the way the whole ground floor feels - creating volume, bringing in light and making the garden part of the everyday living space.

There’s no better way to finish sharing our latest Harpenden project than with a few words from the people who now get to call it Home.

From the initial ideas and reworking of the layout through to the extension, kitchen, lighting, finishes and final details, this was a project shaped around how Jo and Chris wanted their home to look, feel and function.

For us, a successful renovation is about more than the finished result. It’s about listening, finding the right solutions, considering the practicalities as well as the aesthetics, and being there to guide a project from the first ideas through to completion.

We’re incredibly proud of the finished home, but hearing how our clients felt about both the result and the experience of getting there means even more.

And we couldn’t finish without a huge thank you to them both for being such fantastic clients throughout. Always smiling, always positive and always ready with a drink for everyone on site - even through the dust, disruption and some pretty challenging stages of the build!

It was an absolute pleasure to help create your new Home. Thank you for trusting us with it.

Good renovation isn't only about creating the big spaces. It's about making every part of a home work harder.

Extending across the full width of the property meant removing the original garage, side passage and covered internal courtyard - giving us the opportunity to rethink much more than the kitchen.

The new layout created space for a generous utility, designed to complement the kitchen cabinetry and worktops, alongside dedicated storage and gym space.

We also found room for a new downstairs bathroom between the original living room and new kitchen, which involved removing the substantial remains of an old chimney breast.

At the front of the house, two existing porch entrances were reconfigured and awkward cupboard space removed, almost doubling the size of the entrance hall. The staircase was then updated with new spindles and handrail, with feature lighting completing the transformation.

Individually, they're relatively small changes. Together, they make the whole house work considerably better for the family who lives here.

A huge thank you to Lewis, Tim and all the team at LPS Builders for their hard work throughout some truly terrible weather - and for overcoming every hurdle with a smile.

The kitchen at our Harpenden project.

At the heart of the new ground-floor layout, the kitchen needed to work as part of the much larger open-plan living space rather than feel like a separate room.

The darker cabinetry gives the kitchen real definition within that space, balanced by warm walnut joinery and the lighter stone worktops. Details such as the sculptural pendant lighting, bronze fittings and concealed storage were all carefully considered to bring warmth and character to the clean, contemporary design.

The large island creates a natural focal point - somewhere to cook, gather and spend time together - while the open layout allows views right through to the garden beyond.

One of our favourite details is the concealed cabinet, which disappears into the bank of cabinetry when closed but opens to reveal beautifully finished timber storage inside.

A kitchen designed not just around how it looks, but around how this family will actually use it.

Introducing our latest Harpenden project.

A complete renovation and extension, designed around the way our clients and their family wanted to live.

We were recommended to our clients, who came to us with some great ideas about how they wanted to rework their existing home and extend within the available planning parameters.

We engaged Duncan James Design to support the architectural side of the project, while we developed a layout that would completely rethink the ground floor - creating a light, open and connected living space, with the garden very much part of the design.

With planning limiting how far we could extend, getting the internal layout right was key. Every internal wall was removed and the old kitchen demolished before the new structure began to take shape, including a large pitched roof, vaulted ceiling and exposed steelwork.

The result is a home that feels dramatically different, without simply adding space for the sake of it - a considered renovation that makes much better use of the existing footprint while creating the open, connected family space our clients wanted to achieve.
