Project reveal: Kingston upon Thames
This one took a little over a year from my first meeting last summer to these photographs, and I’m very happy to finally be able to show it to you.
It’s part of a larger ground floor renovation and extension in Kingston. The old conservatory came down and the ground floor was reconfigured by Fletcher and Crane Architects, who designed such a beautiful space and started the journey with the clients. I joined as their work was being completed, while the kitchen was taking shape.
I think a room is rarely designed by just one person. Once the architecture was in place, the clients were working out how to fill the floor plan they’d been given, and how to furnish and style it around the way they live. My job was to design these two rooms, the living and the dining, within a wider design I wasn’t part of, respecting the heritage of the house and bringing in the cosy, modern feel they wanted.
The living end is all about the garden, so we kept it open and full of light. The dining end is naturally darker and more enclosed, so we leaned into that with a textured Romo wallpaper that brings colour and depth. Joinery across the opening links the two rooms and quietly hides the structure.
The natural shape of the space gives you a lot of long, straight lines, so I brought in circles wherever I could to soften them: the coffee table, the pendants, the curve of the chairs.
What matters to me is that a home still feels like a home when the architecture is doing a lot.
If you’re planning an extension and wondering how the rooms will fit together, I’d be happy to talk it through. My services page is linked in my bio.
