Let the room dictate the kitchen.

This kitchen occupies a single seven-metre run along one wall of a converted church.

It would have been easy to wrap the cabinetry around the corner and squeeze in more storage, but that would have made the room feel like a fitted kitchen rather than the generous architectural space it once was.

In period buildings, I often find restraint leads to better design. By keeping the kitchen to one wall, the proportions of the room remain intact and the original architecture continues to take centre stage.

Sometimes the best design decision is knowing when to stop.

Behind every great kitchen is a hardworking pantry.

A well-designed pantry quietly does the heavy lifting. It keeps the kitchen clear, organised and uncluttered, so the space you spend time in feels calmer, more practical and more enjoyable to use. When everything has its place behind one door, the kitchen is free to be exactly what it should be.

In this pantry, we’ve used our 12”, 10” and 4” cast bronze pantry brackets to create shelving that’s built to be used every day and made to last a lifetime.

Simple forms, endless combinations.

A single k**b might seem insignificant.

Mix it with another shape. Repeat it across a piece of furniture, a kitchen or an entire house, and those small decisions begin to shape the character of the space.

Good design isn’t always about adding more. Often it’s about finding the right combination and repeating it with confidence.

An alcove seat doesn’t need to work hard to earn its place in a room.

This bespoke alcove seat combines seating and architecture in a way that feels as though it has always belonged, sitting open beneath rather than enclosed. Finished with our cast bronze upholstery buttons and turned furniture legs, both available in our home store, it rests comfortably against the beautifully worn plasterwork we chose to preserve rather than conceal.

It’s a very nice place to settle down with a cup of coffee. Though if you happen to be drinking a Negroni, you’ll notice it matches the blood-red leather of the seat rather too well.

A closer look at one of the details that quietly holds a room together.

This bespoke footstool was designed for the space, standing on hand-stripped and waxed original floorboards — the kind of character sanding would have erased completely. Look closer and you’ll find the real craftsmanship: a turned Ottoman Leg, hand-finished and substantial enough to anchor the whole piece.

It’s available through the shop, and it’s exactly the sort of detail we build into every piece — small enough to miss, impossible to unsee once you have.

This rug has lived a few lives before this one.

It was woven in the 19th century for a French stately home, chosen by someone who wanted their reception rooms to feel as grand as the architecture around them. Generations later, it surfaced in Joshua Lumley’s showroom, waiting for the right room to ask for it.

We weren’t looking for it specifically. We were looking for something that wouldn’t compete with this room’s other survivor: the original Georgian plasterwork, left faded rather than restored, because a perfectly restored ceiling would have made every original cornice look like an apology.

When the rug arrived, it didn’t need introducing. The colours had already done the work of fading gracefully, and it sat beneath the floor-to-ceiling windows as if it had been there since the house was built. We added bespoke alcove seating, a leather-topped coffee table, and a footstool, all new, all made to disappear into the room rather than announce themselves.

That’s the part people don’t always notice in photos. The best rooms aren’t curated. They’re collected, layer by layer, decade by decade, until a room stops looking decorated and starts looking lived in.

A quiet corner from a recent project — an oak and sapele side table we made bespoke for the room, alongside George Smith seating and a vintage rug from Joshua Lumley. The best interiors rarely come from one piece. They build slowly, through materials, craftsmanship, and objects gathered over time.
