We didn’t design this corner of the den specifically for fall, but it certainly feels like we did. 🍂

Deep maroon, burnt orange, dark green, and a little candlelight come together in a palette that feels especially good this time of year.

Proof you don’t need pumpkins to make a room feel like fall. 🎃

September at Saltbox was a busy one! 😮‍💨

Here’s a peek at a few of the projects, installs, and very important outfit coincidences that kept us moving last month.

The art went up at one of the most colorful homes we’ve ever worked on! 🎨

This home has personality in spades, so there was no way we were going to let the artwork play it safe.

There are so many unique pieces throughout, but the standout has to be this gallery wall. It adds even more color, warmth, and personality to an already very fun home.

When your design taste is so similar that you accidentally show up to the jobsite wearing almost the exact same outfit.

We’re calling it team cohesion 🤣

We also revisited a previous client this month to help finish some of the smaller spaces throughout their home.

We first worked with this family on some of their bigger spaces, including their baby girl’s nursery. This time around, we tackled the entry, hallways, guest rooms, and bathrooms—carrying the same color, personality, and thoughtful details into the spaces in between.

Because sometimes it’s those final layers that take a home from mostly done to actually feeling complete.

And that’s a wrap on September! There’s plenty happening already, so we’ll see you back here for October’s recap. 👋

There’s a lot that happens between an idea and a finished room.

For this primary bedroom in our “All I Want” project, we started by drawing our furniture selections to scale so we could see exactly how everything would sit in the room. From there, we determined the sconce locations based on the actual size and placement of the bed and nightstands—down to the inch.

Then we built out the full design so our clients could visualize how the furniture, lighting and materials would all come together before anything was installed.

Swipe through to see the progression from scaled drawing → design presentation → finished space.

Turns out, the pretty picture at the end starts with a whole lot of measuring. 😉

Color is only one part of what makes a material interesting.

This guest bath started out pretty basic, so we brought in a soft green tile with subtle variation from piece to piece. We then selected the vanity and custom-colored it to coordinate with the shower tile, creating a layered, tonal palette rather than introducing another color into the mix.

The marble countertop adds another layer of natural variation, while metallic details balance all that green and keep the room feeling warm.

Proof that a space doesn’t need a lot of different materials to be interesting. Sometimes the materials just need to do a little more work.

Scroll through to watch this kitchen transform.

Before: dark, closed off, and not making the most of the space.

After: brighter, warmer, and a whole lot more inviting.

This kitchen had good bones, it just wasn’t working as hard as it could. Our clients had the idea to add a window to bring in more natural light, and from there, we opened things up, layered in warm materials and color, and rethought the layout to make everyday life in the kitchen a whole lot easier.

The result feels lighter, happier, and much more connected to the rest of the home.

A pretty kitchen is great. A pretty kitchen that actually works for the people living in it? Even better.

One kitchen design doesn’t fit every home.

Good kitchen design isn’t about finding a photo you love and recreating it exactly. It’s figuring out what you love about it — the color, the materials, the contrast, the way it feels — and translating those ideas into something that works for your home and the way you live.

Here’s a look at some of the kitchens we’ve designed over the years. Different layouts, different materials, different personalities — because they were designed for different people.

Save this for your future kitchen remodel, and pay attention to the details you keep coming back to. That’s usually a pretty good clue about what you actually love.

Looking for living room design ideas? Start here.

We’ve designed a lot of living rooms over the years, and no two have looked exactly alike, because no two homes (or the people living in them) are exactly alike.

The layout, scale, materials, lighting, color — all of it should reflect who is using the space.

Because a great living room isn’t just about making it look good. It’s about creating a space that works well, feels inviting, and makes you want to actually spend time there.

Save this one for your next living room project. 📌

Sometimes the best design details are right above your head.

We love using lighting as an opportunity to bring in an unexpected shape, a little contrast, or something that makes a room more interesting.

Of course, a light fixture needs to actually light the room. But if it’s going to hang right in the middle of the space, we think it should bring something to the design, too.

Here are a few of our favorites from projects over the years. Which one are you picking? 💡

A brand-new home gives you a beautiful blank slate. The fun part is making it actually feel like the person who lives there.

For this home office, we started with a neutral foundation and layered in artwork, books, collections, and meaningful objects that reflect our client—making those pieces part of the design rather than an afterthought.

We also thought about how he’d actually use the room. A comfortable place to sit was a must, which sent us on the hunt for the elusive good-looking recliner. (Harder to find than you might think 😂)

The result is an office that feels polished and pulled together, but still distinctly his—with a very comfortable spot for the occasional sneaky afternoon nap. 😴
